The Hartt School, a conservatory of Music, Dance, and Theatre at the University of Hartford, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Conducting and Director of Bands and Wind Ensembles beginning August 2026. The next Director of Bands and Wind Ensembles will provide a comprehensive, progressive vision and administrative leadership of Hartt’s wind, bands, and contemporary ensembles. In addition, the position includes teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in conducting and additional courses according to candidate’s strengths.
Required Qualifications:
1. The terminal degree of PhD or DMA in Conducting at the time of appointment is required; however, a master’s degree in Conducting with significant experience with band, wind, and/or ensemble conducting at the national and/or international level will be considered.
2. Conducting/Teaching Experience:
For Assistant Professor: A documented minimum of three (3) years successful band, wind, and ensemble conducting/teaching experience in a college or university classroom, collegiate-level masterclass, and/or professional festival/young artist program setting.
For Associate Professor: Tenured and holds the rank of Associate Professor at an accredited institution or has teaching and professional accomplishments commensurate with the associate professor rank.
For Full Professor: Tenured and holds the rank of Full Professor at an accredited institution or has the teaching and professional accomplishments commensurate with the professor rank.
3. Demonstrated record of innovation and creativity in band, wind, and ensemble conducting/programing including a strong commitment to performing repertoire from underrepresented composers.
4. Demonstrated collaborative, organizational, and communication skills.
5. Proven history of administrative leadership of a band/wind program.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Professional activity associated with nationally and/or internationally recognized band and wind ensembles and organizations.
2. The commitment and ability to recruit new undergraduate and graduate conducting and instrumental students in collaboration with Hartt performance faculty and Hartt Admission.
3. Experience mentoring graduate conducting students including providing conducting time at the podium and playing new works.
4. Experience teaching band, wind, and ensemble conducting, conducting pedagogy, and/or special topics seminars in band, wind, and ensemble conducting.
5. Engagement and experience with community-oriented ensembles including, but not limited to, youth ensemble conducting, summer music festivals, and community ensembles.
6. A demonstrated commitment to scholarship and a vision for future creative work and/or commissioning, premiering, and/or recording new works for band and wind ensembles.
