Paideia is an independent, progressive  pre-K through 12 college-preparatory school in the Emory University area of Atlanta. The High School enrolls approximately 465 students. The curriculum consists of extensive offerings in English, social sciences, mathematics, foreign languages, natural and physical sciences, art, and music. Class size averages 15 students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The science department offers a full range of courses including Biology I in 9th grade, Chemistry I in 10th grade and a variety of courses for 11th and 12th graders including Humans and the Environment, Forensics, Anatomy and Physiology, Marine Science, Neuropsychology, AP Physics 1, 2, C, AP Chemistry, AP Biology.

Full time teachers teach four classes in the High School. This position would include teaching two High School Biology 1 classes and one Upper Level Anatomy and Physiology during our Long Terms.  The other time will include setting up labs for science teachers throughout the department, organizing and managing the chemistry lab, and supervising up to 3-4 students who choose to take Lab Assistant as their non-academic elective course. This also includes teaching four courses during our Short Terms (January and May). Other responsibilities include academic advising of 10-12 students and weekly faculty meetings. Faculty may also choose to act as a club or student activity sponsor or coach a sports team. 

In addition to teaching responsibilities in both long terms and short terms, faculty have an advisory group of 10-12 students. Faculty members are required to attend weekly faculty meetings, participate in professional development training, support student programming days and events, and a list of things that can come up in the day in the life of a teacher.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Important personal qualities include a love of learning, interest in and demonstrated ability to teach and support adolescents, an engaging teaching style, flexibility, organizational skill, energy, collegiality, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues especially in teaching the 9th-grade Biology 1 course.

Minimum Qualifications:

We are looking for someone who has a biology background, practice with a variety of instruction methods, and a minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience. While a college degree in a related field is required, a master’s is preferred.

Paideia is a K-12 college preparatory school of 999 students in the Emory University area of Atlanta; the elementary school enrolls 333 students. The elementary program includes twelve full-day, self-contained classrooms grades K-6. There are two teachers in each class of twenty-six to twenty-eight children. Teachers work together as lead teacher and assistant or as two co-lead teachers. Other than classes with specialists including art, music, physical education, and library, children remain with their own teachers throughout the day.
