St. Bernard’s School is a K-9 independent boys’ school founded in 1904. The school, located on the Upper East Side, serves a diverse community of approximately 380 students and 100 employees.

We are seeking a third-grade homeroom teacher to begin July 1, 2026. This teacher will report to the Head of the Junior School and will work in close collaboration with the other teachers of the grade. This teacher will have the opportunity to bring our mission to life as they deliver an inclusive curriculum that engages our students in valuing multiple perspectives, develops students’ knowledge of–and empathy for–the diversity of human experience, and builds their social-emotional and academic skills.
Responsibilities:
- Establish and cultivate a classroom community that promotes student confidence and community responsibility
- Uphold professional obligations that include but are not limited to assigned duties, meetings, parent conferences, and school events
- Collaborate with other teachers to ensure consistency between classes
- Collaborate with specialist teachers regarding the individual behavioral and learning needs of specific students
- Observe and evaluate students’ academic performance, behavior, and social development
- Maintain records of student work and development
- Prepare materials and the classroom for class activities
- Engage and support students of varied identities, lifestyles, and beliefs
- Create an environment that fosters open discussion with the freedom to express varied points of view
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests
- Attend professional development, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Communicate respectfully, effectively, and consistently with parents and/or guardians as needed
- Use computers, audiovisual, and other equipment to enhance learning
- Maintain an organized and inviting classroom that displays student’s work
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Junior School or Head of School
- Be willing to cover classes and other supervisory periods when needed
- Participate in the life of the school community through activities such as supervising a student lunch table, attending school assemblies, etc.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; a master’s degree desirable
- Training, experience, or education in early childhood education
- Deep understanding of curriculum, standards, and expectations for third grade students.
- Understanding of childhood development
- Understanding of learning differences and demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction in the classroom based on those needs
- Flexibility with classroom management, the pacing of curriculum, and student expectations
- Eagerness to contribute to a positive faculty culture by building collaborative and respectful relationships with colleagues and supporting fellow teachers and administrators
- Commitment to maintaining professional standards of appearance, courtesy, responsiveness, discretion, punctuality, and attendance
- Commitment to maintaining academic and behavioral standards and expectations for all students
- Strong interpersonal skills that allow the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, teachers, and administrators
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Working knowledge of Google Suite (Drive, Calendar, Docs, Classroom, etc.)
- For all St. Bernard’s positions, the ability to play the piano is always considered appealing (music is a part of everyone’s day), but it is by no means a requirement.
