The Brandeis University TRiO Upward Bound Program is a year-round college-preparatory program. Our mission is to assist low-income, first-generation college bound high school students in successful completion of secondary education and prepare them academically and socially for enrollment and completion of higher education. Our tutor-counselors help to meet these program objectives during our summer program by leading structured study halls, providing a supportive and encouraging classroom atmosphere, and encouraging students to grow intellectually.Â

Hours and Pay Rate: TC Hours: 12:30 - 3:30 pm from Monday to Thursday and 9:30 - 3:30 on Friday

We are seeking tutor-counselors who can help lead engaging and meaningful workshops for high school students in the following areas (and more). Candidates should be comfortable planning and facilitating interactive sessions that promote creativity, expression, and leadership. We also welcome additional workshop ideas that align with studentsâ™ interests and development.
Areas of interest include:
Debate and Mock Trial
Photography and Videography
Painting (Arts)
Music and Dance
Other creative or skill-building workshops relevant to high school students
Other duties &Â responsibilities include:
Participate in staff orientation a week prior to program start date. Full participation is a condition of employment.
Support student learning through serving as teacherâ™s assistant in morning academic courses.
Facilitate the studentâ™s organizational, problem-solving & communication skills development.Â
Develop and facilitate team activities for leadership and community building.
Lead and supervise students during physical activities in the afternoon.
Assist students in identifying & realizing their academic potential through effective planning.
Provide & maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning.Â
Assist in event set-up and clean up throughout the summer.
Communicate daily with staff members, administrative staff, students, and parents/guardians.
Enforce Upward Bound rules and regulations.
Carry out any other duties as assigned by the staff.
Qualifications:
Matriculating college students (juniors, seniors and graduate students preferred) with some tutoring/counseling experience working with low-income and/or culturally diverse students.
Ability to communicate effectively with HS students; including the willingness & patience to explain academic material to a variety of learning types and to provide constructive feedback and support.
Ability to tutor students in at least one of the following subject areas: English, mathematics, science, history or Spanish
