Job Summary:
This individual will be responsible for teaching and coordinating all music activities for Lower Schools at the Main and Harbour View campuses. The music program in Lower School encompasses weekly music classes, performance opportunities for each Lower School grade level, and after-school chorus for interested third, fourth and fifth graders. Being an independent school, the Lower School music teacher will have significant latitude to shape the program in concert with the school’s mission. This individual will be expected to hold the highest standards of educational professionalism while engaging children from pre-kindergarten through grade five. This individual should be able to work in a collaborative atmosphere, while continuing to advance the current music program, and support all other programs of the school.

We seek candidates who possess the following education, experience, capabilities and qualities:

Essential Functions:
Conduct weekly music classes incorporating but not limited to singing, playing age-appropriate musical instruments and utilizing related activities for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade classes on both campuses.
Plan, rehearse and direct musical experiences for each Lower School grade level including grade level performance for each grade throughout the year.Â
Work closely with classroom teachers to provide interdisciplinary opportunities whenever possible and to select programs which are curricular related.
Work with both Heads of Lower School to order all supplies, materials, and equipment necessary for music-related activities. Â
Maintain open communication with parents, students, division heads, and teachers.
Work closely with the director of the Middle and Upper School choral music program.
Work with the Director of Communications & Public Relations and the Director of Admissions to promote awareness about the music program through school communications and other relevant audiences.Â
Utilize technology to facilitate instruction and enhance learning.
Participate in divisional and whole school meetings and professional development activities.
Perform other duties as assigned by the administration and in accordance with the Employee Handbook and expectations of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
Support the mission and philosophy of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
Required Education/Background:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Music Education.
Valid Teaching Certificate in the content area of Music Education.
Demonstrated experience in the knowledge and teaching of vocal music.
Prior experience as a music educator.
Technology proficiency is essential including use of SmartBoards and digital projectors preferably in an Apple environment. Proficient with Google Educational Apps and Blackbaud preferred.
2 – 5 years teaching experience preferred.
