The College of Fine Arts' School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in The John Wells Directing Program.
We seek a dynamic individual with a demonstrated practice of directing to teach practice-based and academic/theory courses for BFA and MFA Directing students in a conservatory setting.
The applicant will have a curiosity about working across both live performance and digital platforms, is an innovative, conscientious and compassionate leader/collaborator, who can work with a large, diverse faculty. Our applicant possesses strong pedagogical skills, passion for curriculum building, maintains a dedicated commitment to anti-racist, equity, and anti-oppression frameworks while adopting a decolonial approach to teaching, research and practice.
Our successful candidate will teach a mix of directing foundation courses (script analysis and staging techniques), and any of the following genres and contemporary forms as applicable to their expertise: digital media and/or TV and film, play styles, choreography, directing musicals, directing new plays, disability arts practices, theatrical intimacy practices, and/or performance as social practice.
Maintaining professional engagement is encouraged and supported in our School. The chosen candidate will work closely with the two other Directing faculty, Associate Professor Kim Weild and Assistant Professor Justin Lucero.
Responsibilities will include:
Teaching BFA and MFA directing students over a two semester academic year.
Mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate Directing students on productions and occasionally guiding on independent projects/research.
Maintaining a professional practice as research. Carnegie Mellon is an R1 Research Institution, and a nationally recognized profile of creative research is required for tenure. Academic publication is not standard for promotion in the department, but many faculty produce both creative and scholarly research nationally and internationally.
Participating in service to the department, the College of Fine Arts, and the university at large.
Besides teaching, there is an expectation of advising Directing students on productions.
You may also be invited to direct in our season.
This position is open-rank, Assistant or Associate Professor of Directing based on qualifications. The position starts August 2022, with a commitment of nine months per year for an initial appointment of three years. It requires being physically based in Pittsburgh throughout the academic year.
Minimum of four (4) years of teaching experience at the university level
MFA degree or professional equivalence.
