Reporting to the Middle School Principal, the Assistant Principal for Grades 6-8 helps manage the Middle School academic program, including supervision and evaluation of Middle School faculty. The Assistant Principal works collaboratively with Middle School colleagues to establish and maintain a safe and orderly environment that promotes thoughtful, responsible, and respectful behavior of and for students. This individual manages the Middle School advisory program, chairs the Middle School Student Support Team and plans/implements Middle School assemblies, co-curricular and extracurricular events, and after school programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Principal for Grades 6-8 is a 12-month position, with key responsibilities outlined below. The Middle School Principal may assign additional duties in support of School objectives.
Evaluate and appraise faculty through classroom observation of Grades 6-8 classes.
Chair the Middle School Student Support Team in support of differentiated instruction.
Oversee, in coordination with the Middle School Counselor, the Middle School Advisory program. This includes holding meetings and designing grade-level advisory lessons.
Oversee, in coordination with the Middle School Counselor and Middle School Principal, the Creating Caring Conversations program, including communication about and evaluation of this program.
Oversee and execute distance education support as directed and needed: collaborate with faculty on development and management of online courses and student engagement, communicate with faculty and students on best practices, problem-solve on issues to promote a connected and positive learning environment.
Plan and implement the Middle School assembly calendar and individual assemblies.
Communicate with Grades 6-8 coordinators and advisors to determine strategies to prevent or deal with student conduct problems and issues of social and emotional growth and learning.
Promote a climate of respect and understanding in the Middle School community.
Collaborate with colleagues in the Primary and Upper School divisions to provide a comprehensive program in support of students’ social and emotional well-being.
Direct the Middle School House program.
Design and facilitate orientation programs for students new to WIS.
Promote, organize, and supervise teacher-sponsored clubs (including budgets).
Sponsor the Middle School International Student Union (ISU) and its events and oversee the budget.
Develop, supervise and evaluate after-school activities and programs, including the supervision and evaluation of their staff.
Organize and supervise extra-curricular activities such as dances and Grade 8 Moving Up.
Oversee student discipline and ensure parents and colleagues are informed as appropriate.
Review student attendance, ensuring it is accurate and timely.
Create the teachers’ ROTA schedule and monitor faculty coverage during scheduled breaks.
Ensure adequate supervision and parental permission for all school-sponsored activities during and after the school day.
Create the master schedule in coordination with Upper School colleagues.
Coordinate the Middle School master calendar of tests, ERBs, projects, clubs, subject labs, and events.
Create daily announcements.
In conjunction with Middle School faculty, plan and organize overnight school trips, domestic and international, and oversee the schedule for Grade 8 language exchange programs.
Attend faculty, staff, parent, and student meetings.
Teach one class each semester/year.
Previous administrative experience (at least three years) at an international school
Teaching experience (at least three years), preferably in Grades 6-8
Experience in implementing the principles and current trends in education and curriculum, staff development, essential elements of instruction and supervision
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with school stakeholders
Ability to lead staff toward instructional improvement and conduct relevant training
Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, work effectively under pressure, and pay attention to detail
Cultural fluency derived from international experience
Knowledge of Harvard’s Project Zero
Understanding of the IB Diploma Program is a plus
Experience working effectively with a diverse parent body who have high expectations for their children and the School

Strong communication skills, a sense of humor, humility, and empathy
Commitment to diversity and inclusion
Fluency in a language in addition to English would be an asset, but is not required
Master’s degree in education and/or educational administration is preferred

Typically, one half to three-quarters of WIS graduates earn the Bilingual IB Diploma, demonstrating fluency in two languages.
