| Derby Academy, a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 co-educational day school located in Hingham, Massachusetts, seeks an enthusiastic, well-qualified candidate for the position of Primary & Lower School (PreK - Grade 3) Music Teacher beginning in August 2021. Rooted in the school’s motto, “Improve Both Mind and Heart,” Derby Academy provides students with a joyful and rigorous academic environment. Music at Derby is a continuum of opportunities for children to listen, sing, dance, compose and play instruments. Enjoyment and creation of music is a fundamental and inextricable part of the Music Program at Derby. The music teacher will teach all PreK through Grade 3 classes and assist with major school initiatives related to the Arts Program. The Music Teacher is expected to collaborate with colleagues at various grade levels and within the department effectively. The Music Teacher is responsible for selecting age appropriate vocal repertoire for performances that includes a holiday program and year end choral concert. An ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience teaching in an early childhood setting, as well as a strong choral and instrumental/band background. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in music education (certification in Kodály or Orff preferred), excellent written and verbal communication skills, commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, ongoing engagement in professional development, and demonstrated experience working with young children is required. At least three years of previous teaching experience is preferred, though Massachusetts teacher certification is not required for consideration. The ideal candidate will: - Have a strong professional background in vocal development as well as band/ensemble and accompaniment instruments;
- Have experience working with young students and knowledge about early childhood development;
- Have enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to collaborate with colleagues both in the department and across disciplines;
- Provide activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, innovation, problem-solving, and the use of technology;
- Have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and the impact it has on the curriculum and the community;
- Create a supportive and caring classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another, through student-centered instruction, collaboration and authentic assessment;
- Communicate with families to provide timely and appropriate feedback regarding student progress;
- Possess a growth mindset when it comes to engaging with relevant and mission-driven professional learning for themselves.
