The ideal candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively, develop clear and engaging content to market programs and events and possess creativity and positive energy. Under the general supervision of the Recreation Superintendent the Recreation Specialist III will plan, market, supervise family and youth programs and events. The focus will be on providing high quality, fun and impactful programs and events in both the summer and winter. They will be responsible for administering all aspects of registration, participant supervision, direct the daily workflow of subordinate staff and volunteers, budget monitoring and cultivating community partnerships with a wide variety of non-profits, businesses, and school groups. The Recreation Specialist III will oversee up 3 seasonal and part time staff.

This position requires a High School Diploma, an Associates Degree in Recreation or a related field is preferred. Other requirements include a minimum of 2 years experience organizing events or planning and administering programs, 6 months supervisory experience, a demonstrated proficiency in personal computer applications and the ability to maintain a valid driver’s license.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough is a local government agency serving the interior of Alaska, Fairbanks and the surrounding communities. The department employs around 100 people during the peak summer season and has an annual operating budget of approximately $8.5 million. The department consists of four divisions, Administration, Recreation Services, Parks Maintenance, and Pioneer Park. A wide variety of amenities are offered to the community including 5 outdoor recreation areas, 3 indoor swimming pools, a recreation center, an ice arena, sports fields, and comprehensive trail system. In the warmer months, residents enjoy the beautiful swim beaches, historic parks, youth programs and fun family events. When the temperature is cold, our parks are still hot!
