Position Description: Music Director, Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra (Princeton, New Jersey)
The Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra (GPYO) seeks an energetic and committed Music Director to lead our organization, with its distinguished 60-year history, into the next phase of its development. In this half-time position, s/he will conduct our most advanced ensembles and guide the staff and board as we re-shape our post-pandemic programming and extend our reach within the community.
Starting Date: July 2021
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications, experience, and vision
Reports to: President of the GPYO Board of Directors
Conduct rehearsals and concerts; maintain a motivating and efficient rehearsal technique throughout weekly rehearsals (September - June).
Ensure appropriate selection of ensemble repertoire, with an emphasis on effective use of all orchestra players and memorable performance experiences for the musicians and their families.
Supervise and coordinate the activities of the GPYO students and artistic staff engaged to assist with training, workshops, or performances.
Plan and oversee membership auditions and competitions; engage other qualified individuals to assist in evaluating skills and techniques of applicants as appropriate; make final determinations for applicants to be accepted into GPYO and determine ensemble/seating placements.
Consult with and advise administrative leadership to prepare the annual schedule of rehearsals, concerts and special events; present the final schedule to the Board for approval.
Evaluate the training and performance of the Youth Orchestra and its artistic staff, and present a summary outlining overall accomplishments, strengths, and weaknesses at the conclusion of each season.
Perform other musical duties as requested by the Board of Directors.
Organizational Leadership Responsibilities:
Maintain an accurate account of student enrollment and forecast future trends.
Identify, develop and execute student recruitment strategies in collaboration with artistic and administrative staff.
Attend periodic GPYO Board meetings and advise the Board regarding artistic matters, making reports on the progress of the GPYO ensembles.
Collaborate with administrative staff and Board of Directors on long-range and scenario planning for the GPYO.
Work closely with administrative staff in creating the artistic budget and monitoring expenses throughout the season.
Work closely with staff and volunteers to coordinate ensemble activities and communications.
Community Engagement Responsibilities:
Represent the GPYO both internally and externally; when appropriate, giving speeches, media interviews, and directing ensemble groups at public and private events.
Maintain active, collaborative relationships with private studio teachers, school music educators and organizations such as New Jersey Music Educators Association and New Jersey Music Teachers Association in order to strengthen music education in our region.
Develop strong connections to partner organizations in the Greater Princeton area.
Play an active role in fundraising and publicity activities, networking with educators, sponsors, parents, and current and prospective donors.
The Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra is a not for profit, 501(c)(3) organization that is supported through tuition, performance revenues, program ads, and public, private, and corporate funders. Originally founded as the Mercer County Symphony Orchestra, the GPYO is proud to be celebrating over 60 years training young musicians and delighting audiences. GPYO is made up of elementary to high school students from Central New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. Entrance is by competitive audition. Through their involvement with the orchestra, gifted young musicians hone their skills as performers in a large orchestral group, learn to work with others in pursuing common goals, and enrich all of our lives through public performances of classical music. M.M. or MFA in Orchestral Conducting or equivalent professional experience;
3-5 years’ experience teaching and directing student ensembles at the high school or university level; and
Record of active creative artistry commensurate with a competitive regional youth orchestra.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate a high profile in the profession or potential for distinguishing themselves as artists in their field on the national level.
Additional Salary Information: Negotiable. Commensurate with qualifications, experience and vision.
