The Lakeland Youth Symphony is searching for a new Symphony Orchestra Conductor for the 2021-2022 season.  Job responsibilities include the following:

Symphony Orchestra Conductor 

  • Leads all Monday evening (7:00-9:15 pm) rehearsals for Symphony Orchestra [SO] and provides bowings/notes for the orchestra
  • Conducts auditions and determines seating and ensemble participants
  • Determines repertoire for SO
  • Liaisons with area music teachers to complete SO instrumentation
  • Develops plan for SO’s annual musical retreat and other appropriate outreach opportunities
  • Directs recruitment for SO

The ideal candidate will…

  • Possess an M.A. in music, conducting preferred with a minimum of three years experience in leading a full orchestra. Must have proven ability to exercise leadership in developing the total artistic quality of an orchestra.
  • Enjoy working with young people, understanding their unique social and emotional needs in the context of busy extra-curricular schedules and demanding schoolwork.
  • Know classical repertoire suitable for developing young musicians, challenging without discouraging them.
  • Foster community relationships, both within and without the LYS family.
  • Commit to the long-term development of the Lakeland Youth Symphony as a whole, introducing opportunities for growth and new avenues of education and community collaboration.

About Lakeland Youth Symphony
Lakeland Youth Symphony was founded 1957 by parents, music teachers and friends who wished to broaden the string ensemble opportunities for young musicians in the Lakeland, now Morris County, area of New Jersey. Lakeland Youth Symphony began with a string ensemble of a few high school students. Today, Lakeland Youth Symphony has expanded to offer programs to over 150 children ranging in age from five to eighteen. This once small, single orchestra, has grown into four orchestras with a unique Prelude string program for beginners as young as five.
