Summary of Essential Job Duties: - In consort with the Costume Design Faculty and the Chairs of Theatre Arts and Dance, the primary responsibility of the position is managing the costume shop for Theatre and Dance Programs' performing arts seasons which includes 4-6 theatre pieces, two dance concerts, and smaller productions as needed. Realizing the design of the productions in collaboration with the costume designer, directors, production manager, and student labor. This may include original designs, reworking stock, rentals, loans, or any combination thereof. In every case, the Costume Shop Manager will assume primary responsibility for the overall coordination of the shop work flow and effort to realize the aesthetic, budgetary and theatrical needs of the production season for the department.
Educational Requirements: - Typically a Master's degree or equivalent professional experience in costume construction, shop managerial work. Knowledge and experience working in theatrical environment.
License/Certification/Registration Requirements: Minimum Qualifications: - Minimum of four years prior professional experience in the field managing productions or a costume shop.
- Collaboration, pattern-making, draping, some tailoring, craft knowledge, hair & makeup, dyeing, creative problem-solving, budgeting. Historical aspects of costume, construction methods, fabrics, pattern-making, crafts, wigs, makeup, and design processes. Additional knowledge in sewing machine functions and maintenance, work flow organization, local and national suppliers, computer literacy, aptitude with MS Office products, accounting fundamentals, and scheduling. Ensuring students use the equipment properly under supervision.
- Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of: Theatre practice, dramatic literature and and theatre history, historical aspects of costuming, fabrics and textiles, pattern-making, draping, tailoring and construction methods. Principles of supervision, principles of effective instruction of theatre craft. Basic and advanced stage makeup. Art, graphic design, pattern development, draping, tailoring, period costume construction, knowledge of industrial sewing machines, and costume aging and dyeing and other crafts techniques, theatrical makeup
- Ability to instruct in the art and techniques of costuming. Construct, adapt or drape garments from designer’s rendering, sketches or other descriptive instructions. Use industrial and home sewing machines, serger, embroidery, dye equipment, millinery equipment.
