Westtown School is seeking a full-time Lower School and Middle School Instrumental Music Teacher beginning August 2021. Westtown School is an independent, co-educational, pre-K to 12, college preparatory day and boarding school located in suburban West Chester, PA, approximately 30 miles from Philadelphia. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide progressive individual and group instruction for Lower School students. Aid students in selecting and learning to play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments;
Provide instruction for Middle School woodwind, brass, and percussion students in developing their musical skills through ensemble classes;
Direct instrumental ensembles in concerts and performances during the school year;
Contribute to building and sustaining an inclusive community and a program which reflects diverse cultures and perspectives;
Facilitate administering and scoring of the Instrument Timbre Preference Test for raising fourth graders and incoming students;
Supervise an after-school extracurricular Jazz Ensemble for Middle School students;
Serve as a Core Middle School faculty member. Core activities include advising, supervision of study halls and recesses, chaperoning field trips, and related activities that contribute to the Middle School community and the educational experience of our students;
Actively participate in faculty meetings and grade level team meetings;
Work in close collaboration with the Lower, Middle, and Upper School Music Faculty and three-divisional Arts Department Co-chairs to ensure coherence in the music program across the whole school.
BA or BM degree; advanced degree in Music Education preferred - experience with Music Learning Theory a plus
Experience with and commitment to working with Lower and Middle School students, including understanding of their developmental, social, and academic needs
Relevant classroom teaching and conducting experience
Expertise and experience in introductory teaching of band instruments
Expertise and experience in preparing students for performance, including selection of appropriate music and building skills in playing as an ensemble.
Demonstrated growth and commitment to anti-bias anti-racist practices in music education
