The Orchestral Studies Program at Drake University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Studies, beginning fall 2021. Doctorate preferred, Master's degree required with equivalent doctoral professional experience. Salary is competitive.
Responsibilities include serving as Conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra and Director of Orchestral Studies. The successful candidate will also teach Symphonic Literature to music majors, Strings Literature to Music Majors, and additional music course(s) depending on Department need and candidate specialty. These may include, but are not limited to, Upper or Lower Strings Methods (depending on specialty) to Music Education Majors, Music Appreciation to non-majors, applied instrument in the candidate's area of expertise, instrumental conducting, or develop a new course offering for non-music majors. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with colleagues and to assume an active leadership role in the recruitment of music students. The candidate must have proven success as an educational orchestral conductor at the university and/or professional level and demonstrated experience motivating young orchestras; active and visible recruiter; demonstrated commitment to and record of successful teaching at the University level; an active performer/conductor at regional and national levels. Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and ability to forge strong community ties.
