Goucher College invites your application for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of West African and/or African Diasporic dance. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach West African classical and/or contemporary dance techniques, with a secondary expertise in African diasporic dance techniques (including, but not limited to Afro-Caribbean, Dunham, Jazz, Hip Hop, or any other African diasporic dance practices determined by area(s) of specialization). Contributions to other areas of the curriculum (e.g., improvisation, composition, and dance studies) and the ability to teach dance history from Black, critical, and de-colonial centered perspectives are considered assets.
In addition to teaching, candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to the program's productions through choreography, restaging works and/or artistic directorship for performances. Dance faculty members participate in the program's recruitment activities, auditions, curriculum development, mentor and advise students and engage in other service based on the needs of the program. Candidates should demonstrate interest and potential for continued engagement in creative work and/or scholarship and should have completed a terminal degree in dance, or a related field, at the time of appointment. Prior teaching experience is preferred.
The Dance Program, part of the Center for Dance, Music and Theatre at Goucher College is dynamic and well-respected, offering a robust B.A. major and minor in dance. The dance curriculum includes courses in West African Diasporic dance, ballet, modern dance techniques as well as theory courses including history, composition, anatomy and kinesiology, community outreach, dance education and labanotation. Our dance faculty at Goucher are recognized leaders, scholars, working artists, teachers and mentors.
