Position Summary:

The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music position in the Music Program. The Music Program in the Oregon Center for the Arts is medium-sized program ranging from 62–100 undergraduate music majors (BM, BA, and BS), and 10–12 graduate students (MM). The program maintains an active presence on campus and in the community, hosting over 100 events each year. The Music Program and the Oregon Center for the Arts are actively engaging in addressing and serving the needs of the growing diversity of its student body and welcomes applicants from a diversity of backgrounds including historically underrepresented groups in higher education.
Duties include: Director of Bands/Instrumental Music and Conducting. The candidate will direct all facets of the University Band Program, develop a strong relationship with regional music educators, and lead the annual High School Honor Band Festival. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the program, division, and university through active recruitment, departmental and interdisciplinary committees, and ongoing engagement in scholarly, creative, and professional activities. The successful candidate will be expected to develop innovative courses which reflect new directions within the band community and to weave cultural diversity throughout their teaching and music making.
Assignment includes: Conduct the Wind Ensemble, teach undergraduate conducting, brass methods, and offer individual instruction to majors and non-majors in the candidate's applied area (trumpet preferred) through a multicultural lens. The position will require a dynamic, ongoing plan for recruiting and retention of music majors and ensemble members.
Additional assignments may include developing and teaching courses related to jazz, improvisation, composition, or courses in other areas of expertise; and in the long-term, possible development of a Master of Music in Conducting or another appropriate graduate program.
As a faculty member on a tenure track, the candidate will also be expected to maintain their professional development. This can be achieved by outside performances, publishing, conference attendance and presentations, workshop presentations, and continued involvement in professional organizations.
