The School of Music at Western Carolina University seeks a voice teacher at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track). This is a 9-months per year appointment. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until a candidate has been selected.
Responsibilities may include: (1) Teach voice to music majors, including recital preparation, and across a broad spectrum of majors (including vocal performance, music education, and commercial voice) and across a broad spectrum of musical styles (including traditional and contemporary repertoire); (2) Participate in weekly voice principals classes; (3) Teach courses that may include vocal pedagogy; class voice; lyric diction; opera/jazz/commercial small ensembles; and other courses as needed; (4) Serve as academic advisor for voice students; (5) Pursue peer-reviewed scholarship which may include solo and collaborative music performance, publications, pedagogical research, and guest lecturing; (6) Serve on departmental recital adjudication panels and juries; (7) Take an active part in recruitment, including auditions, festivals, and outreach activities; (8) Take part in planning and organizing enrichment activities such as visiting artists, master classes, vocal competitions, recording sessions etc.; (9) Take part in planning and organizing major performances related to the voice area, including choral masterwork concerts, opera/jazz/commercial voice studio performances, etc.; (10) Serve on school, college, and university committees as assigned; (11) Commit to Western Carolina University's and the School of Music's diversity and inclusion efforts, including a commitment to performing works by diverse composers.
MM or demonstrated professional equivalent
Experience teaching voice majors at the college level in a variety of vocal techniques (Classical/CCM).
Demonstrated achievements as a performing artist, voice teacher, and/or scholar.
DMA/PhD Music Education (with vocal concentration) or demonstrated professional equivalent
Extensive experience teaching voice majors at the college level, including demonstrated success placing students in master's or doctoral programs, or student achievement in competitions or professional work environments
Membership in and active involvement with the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS)
Teaching experience in vocal courses such as vocal pedagogy; class voice; lyric diction; opera/jazz/commercial small ensembles; Experience teaching microphone techniques for vocalists in stage and studio settings; etc.;
Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in teaching diverse student populations, including first‐generation college students.
