Assistant Director of Liturgy & Spirituality, Campus Ministry
The Assistant Director of Liturgy & Spirituality, Campus Ministry is to oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of all liturgical celebrations and music at Campus Ministry & Spirituality (CMS). This position enhances the spiritual life of the campus through inclusive and meaningful Catholic liturgies and spirituality programming. The role includes student formation aligned with the mission and charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet as well as programming that is spiritual but not explicitly religious.
Work Location: Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles) and Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles). Remote work available 1-2 days per week.
Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate's qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Catholic Liturgies - Assistant Director of Catholic Liturgies
Liturgical Planning and Oversight
Plans, coordinates, and evaluates all university liturgical celebrations including daily and Sunday Masses, holy days of obligation, sacraments, and seasonal services (e.g., Advent, Lent, Ash Wednesday).
Designs liturgies that reflect the liturgical year, embrace diverse cultural expressions, and align with Catholic tradition and the university's charism.
Collaborates with presiders, lectors, altar servers, Eucharistic ministers, and sacristans for proper liturgical execution.
Presider & Sacramental Coordination
Maintains relationships with local clergy, religious communities, and diocesan offices to coordinate presiders, confessions, and sacramental celebrations.
Schedules and supports opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, anointing of the sick, and other rites as needed.
Liturgical Music Direction
Supervises all musical aspects of liturgy, including selection of hymns, cantoring, and ensemble leadership.
Provides formation, rehearsals, and support for music ministers?students and professionals alike.
Ensures musical selections reflect seasonal themes, liturgical norms, and cultural inclusivity.
Training and Formation of Liturgical Ministers
Recruits, trains, and mentors student and faculty/staff liturgical ministers.
Provides formation on Catholic liturgical theology, practical skills, and the spirit of hospitality in worship.
Worship Space and Supplies Management
Oversees the preparation, beautification, and maintenance of sacred spaces including chapels and outdoor liturgy areas.
Manages inventory and purchase of liturgical supplies, vestments, vessels, and seasonal decor.
Retreats and Spiritual Formation
Facilitates and supports retreats and days of reflection rooted in Catholic spirituality, including opportunities for prayer, sacraments, and theological engagement.
Coordinates with campus partners for cross-departmental formation initiatives.
Campus-Wide Catholic Celebrations
Plans major university-wide liturgical events such as Baccalaureate Mass, Founders Day Mass, Missioning Mass, and memorial services.
Collaborates with departments (Student Affairs, Mission Integration, etc.) to incorporate liturgical life into broader university events.
Integration of Charism and Mission
Embodies and promotes the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet through all liturgical experiences.
Offers formation and storytelling around the CSJ legacy, their values, and their theological influence on university life.
Stronger Together - Director of (Spiritual-but-not-Religious) Student Engagement
Student Leadership Development
Recruits, trains, and mentors a diverse team of student leaders to create and facilitate programming that nurtures curiosity, reflection, and purpose-driven life.
Provides regular one-on-ones and team formation rooted in listening, leadership, and values-based service
Creation of Brave and Reflective Spaces
Designs inclusive gatherings and reflective rituals that support students from all faiths or none, including meditations, journaling circles, sunset reflections, storytelling events, and spiritual pop-ups.
Encourages open spiritual exploration that respects students' identities, traditions, and lived experiences.
Programmatic Planning and Implementation
Coordinates weekly or monthly Stronger Together events aligned with student needs and themes such as grief, hope, identity, belonging, and healing.
Offers interfaith or non-traditional sacred experiences: labyrinth walks, sound baths, gratitude trees, stress-relief liturgies, and arts-based spiritual expression.
Spiritual Wellbeing and Wellness
Partners with wellness and mental health services to develop programs focused on mindfulness, grounding practices, and compassionate self-awareness.
Normalizes spirituality as an aspect of holistic wellness within the university context.
Community Building and Peer Support
Cultivate a culture of peer-to-peer care, empathetic listening, and intentional hospitality within the Stronger Together team.
Encourages students to co-lead dialogue groups or small circles around justice, identity, vocation, and resilience.
Collaborative Partnerships and Campus Engagement
Works closely with Residential Life, DEI, Arts programs, Student Activities, and academic departments to co-create spiritually enriching programming.
Coordinates cross-campus initiatives such as Interfaith Week, Social Justice Teach-Ins, or National Days of Healing.
Assessment and Evaluation
Designs and implements feedback tools to assess impact and relevance of both Catholic and interspiritual programs.
Uses data and reflections to inform program improvements and articulate student outcomes to stakeholders.
Spiritual Accompaniment and Availability
Be a visible and trusted presence for students, offering informal spiritual accompaniment, reflective conversations, or resource referral.
Creates quiet spaces or office hours for students to reflect on meaning-making, life questions, and transitions
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinating spiritual (non-religious) student-led programming in collaboration with campus partners.
Collaborates with other Catholic and CSJ institutions and organizations as requsted. Serve on relevant campus and university committees as needed by CMS. Assisting with retreats and formation workshops for faculty, staff, and students as requested by the Student Affairs Division.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Knowledge:
Catholic liturgical practices and norms; principles of inclusive worship; sacred music repertoire; theology of charism and mission integration.
Abilities and Skills:
Musicianship (piano, organ, or guitar); choral direction; event planning; student mentorship; intercultural sensitivity; strong organizational and communication skills.
Education:
Master's degree in Music, Theology, Liturgy, or related field required.
Experience:
Minimum 2-5 years in Catholic liturgy, music ministry, and student programming. Prior university or young adult ministry preferred.
