Purpose: The Executive Director manages all aspects of the Collins Center for the Arts (CCA) including programming, development, and engagement with the campus and community. This includes strategic planning and goal setting, developing and managing budgets, and the oversight of day-to-day operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manages all aspects of the CCA, including programming, planning, personnel, budget, fundraising, and maintenance.
-Is directly responsible for programming and booking events that appeal to campus and community audiences, consistent with the university’s mission and with a view to extending the CCA’s patronage and impact. This role will include negotiating with artists or artists’ representatives and ensuring that contracts are signed in alignment with guidance from the University of Maine System’s offices of General Counsel and procurement.
- With support from CCA staff and the university’s Office of Financial Planning and Analysis, oversees accounting, financial reporting, contracts, payroll, and general administration and management to ensure that the CCA’s operations are financially sound and aligned with university expectations. Identifies and pursues opportunities to expand CCA revenue.
- Works collaboratively with CCA’s marketing director on promotion, marketing, and public relations for the CCA and its events. Ensures coordination between CCA and the university’s Division of Marketing and Communication. The Executive Director serves as the chief spokesperson for the CCA.
- Supervises the CCA personnel and oversees the day-to-day operations of the staff. The Executive Director is responsible for the recruitment, employment, professional development, and release of all personnel including regular employees, student employees, and volunteers. This includes ensuring that job descriptions are kept up to date and that regular performance evaluations are conducted.
- Cooperates with UMaine’s academic units, the Dean of Students Office, and UMaine student government organizations, among others, to ensure that the CCA is accessible to students as a learning laboratory and as a meaningful aspect of student experience. Collaborates with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Performing Arts on student-centered experiences, educational opportunities, and projects.
- Collaborates with the University of Maine Foundation to develop and implement a fundraising plan to accomplish the short and long-range goals of the CCA, with attention to both private and corporate philanthropy.
- Recruits and works with an advisory board. In collaboration with board members, develops and implements appropriate governance procedures for the board, and ensures the productive engagement of the board in the advancement of the CCA.
- Recruits and coordinates a program committee, with representation from the advisory board, campus populations, and others, to ensure stakeholder input into program planning. Works collaboratively with other university entities and local organizations and companies to create programs that provide a range of cultural experiences.
- Develops and maintains collaborative professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.
- Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Required:
- Typically has the education associated with a master’s degree and at least five years of relevant professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with a bachelor’s degree at minimum. - Demonstrated professional experience in the arts, including experience with programming in the performing arts - Excellent oral and written communication skills - Highly developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills - Experience in financial management and budget development - Supervisory and leadership experience - Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, take initiative, and bring projects to fruition
