The University of Michigan Department of Dance invites applicants for a full-time single-semester Artist-in Residence for Winter Term 2025 (January 1 - April 30). The successful candidate will have teaching experience and artistic practices in one or more of the following dance forms at all levels: commercial dance and adjacent dance forms including but not limited to hip-hop and other forms of street dance. Practitioners in African, Asian, or Indigenous Diasporic dance forms also are considered. The visiting artist should have a robust choreographic profile, creative methodology, and be actively networked in their respective professional communities. The preferred candidate also should demonstrate innovative approaches to one or more of the following: Composition and Choreography, Improvisation, Dance History, Dance Technology, Screendance, Somatic practices, or Dance Theory. The successful candidate will work closely with our students and will have the opportunity to produce work for the First-Year Dance Company in winter 2025. Above all we seek a colleague who is committed to helping students become well rounded artists, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens within an inclusive and engaged community.
Proposed Course Load: Three courses based on the candidate's particular strengths may be drawn from:
Upper-Division Physical Practice/Technique
Lower-Division Physical Practice/Technique
Repertory (First-Year Dance Company)
Composition or Dance Technology
Somatic Practices
Additional responsibilities:
Participation in faculty meetings, recruitment events, auditions, and community engagement.
Undergraduate and graduate student mentorship.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience, be an active choreographer/dancemaker, and have a recognized pedagogical methodology. The candidate should be a recipient of choreographic commissions with companies and ensembles who currently are presenting their work in the field.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
