About the United Palace In 1930 the United Palace opened as the Loew's 175th Street Theatre, one of New York City’s most spectacular deluxe movie theatres and vaudeville houses with a seating capacity of 3,400. The architect was Thomas W. Lamb, a leading designer of theaters and cinemas in the early 20th century, and the interior was designed by Harold Rambash, who also did the Waldorf Astoria. In 1969, when many of the city’s grand movie theaters were slated for demolition, the building was purchased, and saved, by a church led by Reverend Ike, an African American pastor with a worldwide following through his televised services.
