Sun Valley Community School is seeking an energetic and engaging Upper School Theater Teacher to lead a dynamic and inclusive theater program for high school students at Sun Valley Community School. This educator teaches up to three theater courses per term, and directs two full-scale theatrical productions each year. The position blends classroom teaching with artistic leadership, technical theater expertise, and mentoring students as both performers and theater-makers. A commitment to equity, collaboration, and student-centered learning is essential.
This is a full-time teaching and directing position starting August 10, 2026. Additional duties will include serving as the theater manager and a student advisor, participating in the school’s extensive Outdoor Program, and engaging in additional Upper School co-curricular activities. For the right candidate, the position could also include Residential Life responsibilities. This position includes benefits including health insurance. SVCS has access to rental housing units throughout the Wood River Valley. Depending on availability, family size and other factors, SVCS may be able to assist new employees who are relocating from out of state with their housing transition. Finalists will be required to complete state and federal background screening to ensure eligibility to work safely with students.
CORE TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES
Teach up to three sections of Upper School theater courses each term and collaborate with the creative arts team to develop a comprehensive theater curriculum.
Direct two theater productions annually (a musical and play), including show selection, managing auditions, rehearsals, technical design, and collaboration with production teams.
Support student engagement with all aspects of theater-making, including dramaturgy, technical design, performance, and backstage work
Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages risk-taking, creative expression, and collaboration.
Collaborate with faculty across disciplines and divisions to integrate theater into broader curricular and co-curricular offerings.
Guide upper school students through the process of applying and auditioning for BFA and summer training programs.
Contribute to the life of the Upper School through advising, event support, or other duties as assigned.
Participate in the outdoor program including co-leading backcountry wilderness trips and frontcountry arts experiences.
CORE THEATER MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the Theater Calendar, scheduling all events held in the theater and help coordinate and/or provide technical support for all theater events.
Arrange for and archive materials related to performances and productions that take place in the theater.
Review and implement policies, procedures, and protocols for the use of the lighting, projection, and sound equipment used in the tech booth, and ensure other users/operators of the theater are appropriately trained.
Develop—in coordination with the Facilities Director, division heads, and relevant arts faculty—an inventory of equipment and a corresponding short, medium, and long-term maintenance schedule for the theater lighting, sound, and projection equipment.
