School/Department Information About UNCSA: Established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, the North Carolina School of the Arts opened in Winston-Salem in 1965 as America's first public arts conservatory. The school became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972. Its mission is to train students for professional careers in the arts. The five conservatories (Dance, Design and Production, Drama, Filmmaking and Music) train aspiring artists from Freshman in High School to Post-Graduate Certificate Students.
School of Drama Overview: The top-ranked School of Drama at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts has produced some of the most versatile and successful actors in theatre, film and television over the past fifty years. The school offers rigorous conservatory training grounded in classical values and provides technical skills that shape today's in-demand actor, training talented artists to become dynamic, versatile, and accomplished. Students develop through rigorous practice, creative techniques, and interpretive and generative work. We provide tools to hone their unique artistic voice, develop their creative process, and foster innovation. We strive to build a just, humane, and diverse school that prepares each student to thrive in a broad range of artistic careers.
Primary Description of Work Reposted: previous applicants need not apply you are still under consideration. The Associate Dean of the UNCSA School of Drama will serve as the principal deputy to the Dean. They will be responsible for supporting the Dean in defining and implementing an overall vision for the school as a national leader for training actors and stage directors who are multi-hyphenated artists successfully working in a variety of entertainment outlets including live theater, film and television. The Associate Dean will support the ongoing work of curriculum revision to adapt and evolve to the rapidly changing environment of the entertainment industry. The Associate Dean must have sufficient knowledge of industry trends to enable stronger cohesion of curricular initiatives around preparing students for successful entry into the industry.
Work Schedule and hours Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
Description of Responsibilities and Duties Strategic Leadership (50%) In collaboration with the dean, the associate dean will serve as a key point of contact to the Provost's Office to meet the administrative and strategic needs for the school. This includes responding in a timely fashion to programmatic updates, curricular matters, and other administrative requests related to the UNC System Office, Board of Governors and Board of Trustees. Actively participate in the annual recruitment process, working closely with the School of Drama's Director of Recruitment. Assist the dean as a liaison for Advancement, Strategic Communications and external programs. Assist the dean and support staff with planning and creating agenda for the annual faculty retreat and all key faculty meetings Serve as the line producer for the Patrons Performance Series
Curricular Planning and Student Engagement (20%) Assist the dean with addressing students of concern, probation and warning letters. Serve as the school's primary liaison with the Office of Student Affairs, working closely with the Wellness Center, Case Management, and Student Conduct to address academic and student concerns. In collaboration with the dean and faculty, oversee the coordination of guest artist visits including escorting, supervising and moderating guests while in town throughout the academic year. Oversee the orientation coordination, scheduling & materials, or creation & coordination of Classroom Demonstration Week & Intensive Arts schedule. Assist the dean with adaptations and changes to the curricular arc and planning for acting and directing students.
Additional Administrative Duties (15%) Supervise Faculty Scheduling Committee Assist with the annual review and revision of the business plan for the School.
Teaching Duties (15%) When appropriate and/or necessary, assume teaching or directing roles as determined by the Dean.
