This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1329 - Assistant Chief Building Operating Engineer position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The budgeted salary range for the position is $25-$33/hour ($47,750-$64,350 annually). Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.

Job Summary
Assistant Chief Building Operating Engineer: Perform and assist in supervising the operation of building mechanical equipment and the maintenance of the building structure and mechanical equipment, furnishings, and fixtures contained therein.
Duties & Responsibilities
Performs and assists in supervising the operation and maintenance of building mechanical equipment, including heating, cooling, and ventilating machinery; steam, water, and waste systems; electrical systems; food-service appliances; and stage operating equipment.
Assists in the planning, implementing and/or supervision of building maintenance, including necessary building repairs, installations, redecorations, building improvements, and the repair and/or replacement of furniture and fixtures. Working collaboratively with KCPA staff to coordinate with F&S on projects as needed.
Performs and assists i n supervising employees engaged in housekeeping activities, arrangements for public functions, or other assigned special services.
Conducts regular inspections of the building to discover need for structural and mechanical repairs and furniture and fixture repairs and to evaluate the maintenance of housekeeping standards.
Prepares reports on inspection findings, written requests for services and supplies, and any other operational records required.
Responsible for maintaining adequate stock of cleaning supplies, light bulbs, spare parts, tools, and related items.
Supervises the erection of displays, exhibits, stage sets, and other arrangements of facilities for public functions.
Trains lower-level engineers in the performance of their duties.
Cooperates, guides, and assists students and staff in properly using the building and its facilities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
The position will require a variety of work environments throughout the facility including offices, classrooms, shops, mechanical equipment rooms, roofs, tunnels, and garages; building spaces such as plenums, attics, crawl spaces and stage grids; formal spaces such as theatres, lobbies, and meeting rooms; as well as food service spaces.
The responsibilities of this position require an understanding of the activities that occur within an extremely large building - maintain the level of maintenance, and services necessary for that activity - and at the same time be able to vary the scheduling of those services to not interfere with the activities. A degree of manual dexterity is necessary to perform some mechanical work.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Any one or combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the categories below:
A. College coursework in mechanical engineering or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
B. Work experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or installation of building mechanical equipment, or closely related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Substantial working knowledge of building maintenance, including the operation of ventilation, air-conditioning, heating, refrigeration, security, and other building mechanical equipment as well as plumbing, carpentry, locks, and other building trades.
Supervisory capability.
Ability and willingness to follow instructions, coupled with a willingness and ability to take initiative.
Ability to perform and supervise others in the performance of duties in public places with a minimum of disturbance.
Computer literate and mechanical aptitude capabilities.
Ability to work effectively with co-workers, subordinates, students, faculty, staff, and the public.
