APAP believes that pay transparency is a critical step toward pay equity and benefits both the job seeker and the employer. For those reasons, we are now requiring that employers include a salary range in all new job postings.
Postings that are backfilled from another association’s career center may not include salary information.

The Putney School is seeking a part-time Dance Teacher for the 2025-26 School Year. The Dance Teacher will teach multi-level afternoon and evening dance classes and lead and nurture all aspects of Putney’s dance program. The Dance Teacher will ensure the dance program is a welcoming environment for students both new and experienced. The breadth of abilities and experience of the successful candidate will dictate the evolution of the position.
About The Putney School: Putney is a progressive boarding school for 225 hardworking and curious students in Putney, Vermont. Hands-on learning is embedded in the school’s culture: a working dairy farm, expansive arts offerings, a robust work program, miles of wooded trails, and large solar arrays serve our curriculum. Employees are also part of an intentional residential experience that values belonging and community. We seek applicants who find joy in their work and help others realize how much fun authentic, student-centered learning can be. The school cultivates and sustains an educational community that values difference. Community members explore how they contribute to building a home at Putney where everyone, especially those from historically marginalized populations, can honor their individual racial, gender, ethnic, and socio-economic identities. Putney recognizes this is difficult, communal work, and the school supports all its employees in developing this critical skill set.
Responsibilities:
Teach dance technique classes (e.g. contemporary forms - modern, ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop and/or world dance, etc.) in the afternoons and evenings during the academic year.
Facilitate weekly Dance Ensemble rehearsals, working with students to create original choreography for performance.
Maintain the Dance Studio and costume collection.
Guide students in preparing for school performances (including end-of-term assemblies and an annual Dance Concert); run technical rehearsals for performances.
Be available to sponsor independent projects during Project Weeks or Senior Exhibitions.
Possible Expanded Responsibilities:
Choreograph the Spring Musical (January - May).
Bring in guest artists and/or arrange artist residencies.
Qualifications:
A broad and deep knowledge of various dance techniques and styles is required, as well as an ability to choreograph and facilitate collaborative creative processes.
The ability to combine rigorous dance training with a student-centered approach that guides young people toward self-knowledge and self-expression and supports a wide range of student interests and abilities.
Previous experience as a working artist and/or teacher is preferred.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of progressive education, strong ethics, clear boundaries, and the ability to work well with teenagers.
How to Apply: Please submit a cover letter and resume via email to employment@putneyschool.org. Please note that applications without a cover letter will generally not be considered. We will continue reviewing applications until the position is filled.
