The Campus Minister at The Woods Academy helps create an environment which
encourages and guides all members to contribute to the Catholic identity of the School
and the formation of a faith community which responds to the spiritual needs of the
students, teachers, staff, and parents. In collaboration with other faculty members, the campus minister brings to life a school rich in spiritual growth, prayer, and service.
Campus minister will teach religion classes and be responsible for leading the planning, implementing, and assessing Catholic religion instruction for students in Grades 1-8. This role will focus on creating a stimulating and supportive learning environment, fostering an inclusive community that supports faith formation. The role involves collaboration with teachers across divisions, maintaining strong communication with parents, and actively participating in the school community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Support the Catholic life of the School and form a faith community.
Facilitate an atmosphere of Christian hospitality where all feel welcome, based on Catholic faith, traditions, and rituals.
Acknowledge and celebrate diversity within the School community.
Communicate regularly with the Head of School, Assistant Head of School, faculty, staff, students, and parents regarding campus ministry, activities, programs, and projects.
Provide opportunities for others to deepen their faith.
In collaboration with the Assistant Head of School, organize, plan, and implement programs for students, faculty, parents, and staff that contributes to community building and faith development.
With the support of the Assistant Head of School, ensure the overall planning and smooth operation of school liturgies and prayer services.
Offer a variety of prayer experiences, both personal, communal, and seasonal.
In collaboration with the Assistant Head of School, provide opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to celebrate the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation, including penance services during Advent and Lent.
Assist with the selection of appropriate sacred music that will enhance student participation at school liturgies.
With the support of the Assistant Head of School, organize and execute various community service-related programs with students, faculty, staff, and parents.
Nurture students in social consciousness based on the Gospels and Catholic Social Teachings.
Infuse the concepts of justice, peace, human dignity, and the integrity of creation into all aspects of ministry.
Provide religious education to Grade 2 and Grade 8 students focused on sacramental preparation.
Establish relationships and communicate regularly with Pastors and Religious Education Directors at the parishes at which Woods families are parishioners.
Other Duties
The Campus Minister is expected to be integrated as much as possible into The Woods Academy community and as such may be assigned other responsibilities like lunch or recess duties. In addition, the Campus Minister will be required to attend and even organize events that take place outside the normal school day such as a Sunday Alumni Mass or family community service activities.
Qualification Requirements
Be an active, practicing Catholic.
Possess a B.A. (a Master’s preferred) degree in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Religious Studies or related field.
Possess the Archdiocese of Washington Catechist Certification or committed to take the necessary steps to achieve this certification as well as ongoing formation.
Be a Catholic in good standing who embraces and transmits the Catholic Church’s teachings on matters of faith and morals.
Three years’ experience with youth and parish ministry or related fields as well as three years’ experience teaching religious education at the primary level.
Strong skills in the areas of communication, initiative, creativity, and problem solving.
Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in technology.
The Woods Academy is an independent Catholic school, offering boys and girls from pre-school through Grade 8 a challenging and supportive educational experience. The Woods Academy is a warm and welcoming community comprised of 300+ students, 200+ families and 60+ faculty and staff. The school is located on six acres in the residential area of Bethesda, Maryland.
