GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Artist in Residence with expertise in drawing, design, and/or theatrical scenic design. This role involves teaching ART101: Design I (with the potential to teach a second course) as well as collaborating with the Performing Arts Department to design or collaborate on the design of the set for the spring musical. The artist will intersect with key content areas covered in THR117: Fundamentals of Theatrical Design, although they will not directly teach that course.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Instructor Responsibilities:
Teach ART101: Design I - Introduce foundational design elements such as line, shape, color, texture, value, and composition, with an emphasis on color theory and visual communication.
Provide instruction in both traditional and non-traditional learning modes.
Select and develop appropriate materials for each class use.
Track and assess student progress.
Maintain appropriate attendance and learner records.
Scenic Designer Responsibilities:
Oversee Scenic Design for the Spring Musical: Collaborate with the Performing Arts Department to design the set or scenic elements, incorporating foundations of theatrical design that intersect with THR117: Fundamentals of Theatrical Design, such as: (a) Script analysis and creative concept development; (b) Integration of mass, proportion, texture, and spatial relationships into set design; and (c) Visual communication of design concepts through sketches, drawings, or renderings.
Collaborate with the production team, considering design constraints, and applying industry-standard tools and techniques.
Mentor students in the creative and technical aspects of scenic design, helping them understand how to apply the elements and principles of theatrical design in a hands-on context.
Foster an inclusive, creative, and collaborative learning environment that encourages experimentation, personal reflection, and critical thinking.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MFA in Design, Scenic Design, Drawing, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Portfolio with experience in theatrical scenic design.
Experience teaching drawing, design, or scenic design at the college level, or substantial experience mentoring students in theatrical productions.
Ability to connect fine arts and theatre design, while collaborating effectively with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working in educational or community theatre.
Proficiency with industry-standard design software (e.g., CAD, Vectorworks).
A strong interest in connecting design theory with practical, real-world application in theatre.
College level teaching experience, preferably at a community college.
Familiarity with, or ability to adopt, consent-based practices in the classroom and rehearsal studio.
Experience using Moodle or other Learning Management Systems.

COMPENSATION: Anticipated starting salary - Step I DCE Pay Scale plus $1500 Scenic Designer stipend. Part-time, non-benefited. MCCC Unit position.

Recording of plenary sessions that is intended for broadcast or webcast requires prior arrangement and permission through APAP;
Advance scheduling is required for all filming during exhibit hours;
Advance scouting, without cameras, is required;
All camera crew personnel must wear press badges, and badges must be visible while on the exhibit floor;
All camera crews will be escorted by a representative of the Conference while on the exhibit floor;
A list of filming needs, indicating company name and booth number, must be approved by APAP in advance of any filming;
Permission must be granted by each exhibitor before any filming begins. Camera crews must provide release forms before filming;
If you ?need power, other than battery pack, advance arrangements are required and can be arranged by contacting Leah Frelinghuysen;
You will be responsible for any costs related to electrical needs;
Interviews for exhibitors in the EXPO Hall should be scheduled up to one week before the conference starts (January 10, 2020) and advance scheduling is required for all filming during exhibit hours
