The Honors College at the University of Utah seeks candidates for a core faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Lecturer). Honors faculty positions are renewable and on-going, with highly competitive salaries and outstanding benefits.
We are seeking an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) for a three-year initial appointment to teach courses in Intellectual Traditions. Designed to give students the opportunity to think in new ways about present-day issues through close encounters with the problems, values, and questions of the past, Intellectual Traditions courses are driven by direct engagement with diverse primary sources and cultural artifacts. The center of the Honors College’s humanities curriculum, Intellectual Traditions offers students a reading, writing, and conversation-rich environment to explore and share insights. Engaging with ideas that have shaped the human experience across diverse eras and cultures, students are encouraged to reconsider their preconceptions and contextualize the present within a more profound historical framework.
This teaching-centered position includes a 3/3 course load, along with the student mentorship and administrative service that Honors faculty provide in support of the college’s mission. While Honors faculty are encouraged to maintain scholarly profiles, renewal and promotion are contingent on teaching performance and overall contribution to Honors, to the university, and to the local community.
Position start date is July 1, 2025. All positions are subject to final budgetary approval.
Qualifications
Applicants from any discipline whose educational background and experience demonstrates readiness to teach the Intellectual Traditions curriculum will be considered. The position offers the opportunity to participate in some of Honors’ newest curricular offerings, and we especially welcome candidates with expertise in Latin American, Asian, or African studies, along with candidates whose experience outside U.S. borders would contribute to Honors offerings. Successful candidates will bring their particular disciplinary expertise but also be excited by and ready to teach broadly scoped humanities courses that push beyond the usual temporal, geographical, or topical boundaries of their training and research.
Candidates should be highly successful teachers, creative in their pedagogy, and able to communicate the value of a humanistic curriculum to students of diverse majors.
Candidates must complete the Ph.D. before the position start date. Applicants who are ABD will be asked to supply a letter from their dissertation director attesting that the degree will be awarded before July 1, 2025.

a cover letter addressing the candidate’s teaching and research interests, as well as their potential contribution to the Honors College, both as a teacher and as a community member;
a curriculum vitae;
a statement of teaching philosophy (300-500 words);
a 250 to 300-word description of an original course in Intellectual Traditions (example syllabuses, which need not be read as prescriptive, along with key policy information about the Intellectual Traditions framework, can be found here;
a 20 – 30 page writing sample (double-spaced) evidencing innovative scholarship (previously published work is welcome);
contact information for three referees;
a complete set of recent teaching evaluations, if available (optional).

Recording of plenary sessions that is intended for broadcast or webcast requires prior arrangement and permission through APAP;
Advance scheduling is required for all filming during exhibit hours;
Advance scouting, without cameras, is required;
All camera crew personnel must wear press badges, and badges must be visible while on the exhibit floor;
All camera crews will be escorted by a representative of the Conference while on the exhibit floor;
A list of filming needs, indicating company name and booth number, must be approved by APAP in advance of any filming;
Permission must be granted by each exhibitor before any filming begins. Camera crews must provide release forms before filming;
If you ?need power, other than battery pack, advance arrangements are required and can be arranged by contacting Leah Frelinghuysen;
You will be responsible for any costs related to electrical needs;
Interviews for exhibitors in the EXPO Hall should be scheduled up to one week before the conference starts (January 10, 2020) and advance scheduling is required for all filming during exhibit hours
