The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) department of the George Mason University Libraries, is responsible for two units: the University Records Management Program (URM) and the Research Center, both located on the Fairfax Campus. The Special Collections Research Center is responsible for acquiring, documenting, preserving, and providing access to primary source research collections and rare books. Our collections - both physical and digital - focus on Mason's development, the University?s academic areas of strength, Virginia and Northern Virginia history and development, theatre and performing arts, conflict analysis and resolution, planned communities, transportation and planning, the study of the Appalachian Trail, and artists? books. This unit actively collects the non-current and archival records documenting the history of George Mason University through its University Archives program, including oral histories of alumni, staff, faculty, and administrators. SCRC archivists strive to highlight diverse and hidden voices in our holdings by what we collect, how those collections are described, through robust instruction and reference programs, and exhibitions and outreach activities highlighting the richness and diversity of our materials.
About the Department:
The Assistant Processing Archivist will support the Special Collections Research Center?s goals in processing the Joel Snyder audio description archive. The Assistant Processing Archivist Position is responsible for specifically processing complex and specialized duties as follows:
Apply current best practices to managing assigned archival processing project; surveys project collection; create processing plan for assigned collection; arrange and describe assigned collection.
Create an EAD-compliant finding aid using ArchivesSpace; initiate and respond to complex communications in carrying out daily operations in person, in writing, via telephone and e-mail and social media tools and participate within SCRC in working groups and committees as appropriate.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for processing of the Joel Snyder audio description archive, a 74 linear foot collection, under the supervision of the Manuscripts and Archives Librarian;
Creates collection finding aid using SCRC?s ArchivesSpace content management system;
Assures appropriate handling, physical housing, and storage of collection materials;
Identifies and refers items as necessary for preservation or conservation;
Participates in the professional life of the University Libraries and George Mason University; and
Reports processing-related statistics throughout the year and in the annual report.
Required Qualifications:
MLS/MLIS/MSLIS degree with archives concentration from an ALA accredited program; or, concentration in archives or certification in archives (such as Certified Archivist) combined with graduate degree in history or related discipline or foreign equivalent or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
Experience in project management;
Experience in archival processing (appraisal, arrangement and description);
Experience with multiple formats, including textual, visual, and audiovisual, both analog and digital;
Demonstrated knowledge of current archival theory, practice, and standards, including DACS and EAD;
Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds;
Ability to thrive in a team-based environment and work collaboratively, and independently;
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and growth;
Excellent organizational skills and highly detail-oriented; and
Excellent written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a special collections or academic archives setting;
Familiarity with preservation and conservation issues and best practices; and
Familiarity with ArchivesSpace, LCSH, LCTGM, and other archival and metadata tools.

Recording of plenary sessions that is intended for broadcast or webcast requires prior arrangement and permission through APAP;
Advance scheduling is required for all filming during exhibit hours;
Advance scouting, without cameras, is required;
All camera crew personnel must wear press badges, and badges must be visible while on the exhibit floor;
All camera crews will be escorted by a representative of the Conference while on the exhibit floor;
A list of filming needs, indicating company name and booth number, must be approved by APAP in advance of any filming;
Permission must be granted by each exhibitor before any filming begins. Camera crews must provide release forms before filming;
If you ?need power, other than battery pack, advance arrangements are required and can be arranged by contacting Leah Frelinghuysen;
You will be responsible for any costs related to electrical needs;
Interviews for exhibitors in the EXPO Hall should be scheduled up to one week before the conference starts (January 10, 2020) and advance scheduling is required for all filming during exhibit hours
