Position: • Teaching courses related to music education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including elementary music methods • Supervising preservice music educators involved in both field observations and student teaching • Candidates with appropriate qualifications may also be assigned to teach other courses as teaching load allows.
Essential Functions: • Teaching a variety of music education courses • Assisting with student teacher placements • Supervising student teaching and practicum interns placed at schools throughout Southern California • Collaborating with other School of Music specialists in the music education area to evaluate and improve curriculum and degree offerings • Assisting with student advisement, recruitment, and retention activities • Maintaining strong working relationships with Southern California music instructors, ensemble directors, and district officials • Maintaining affiliations with appropriate state, district, and national professional associations • Participating in School, College, and University committees and initiatives • Possibly serving as an advisor to the student chapter of NAfME (National Association for Music Education) • Teaching graduate courses in the Master of Music in Music Education degree in area of expertise. • Supervising graduate theses, research, and projects • Broad ability to teach to all music education students including instrumental, choral, and elementary specializations.
Required Qualifications
An earned doctorate in Music Education, Ph.D. preferred (if ABD, doctorate must be completed by the time of appointment)
Three (3) or more years of full-time public school teaching experience as a credentialed teacher at the elementary level (K–6)
Research and peer-reviewed publication experience indicative of strong potential for tenure
Ability to interact effectively with students and faculty in a culturally diverse university community Preferred Qualifications Previous collegiate-level teaching experience
Orff Certification, Kodaly and Dalcroze training, or related elementary music teaching certifications
Experience supervising student teachers in the classroom
