Heritage Hall Performing Arts’ Technical Director is responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of theatrical productions, ensuring smooth operations in the Howard Theatre and other event spaces, and contributing to the overall success of the School's arts programs. This role is for a masterful facilitator, collaborator, and problem-solver who is equal parts manager, artist, and teacher. The TD works extremely well with students, staff, and production teams, while coordinating and managing A/V and construction, maintaining a safe and efficient working environment, and generally being awesome.
The person in this role will join a school community that places high value on arts education and an arts faculty team that is ambitious, collaborative, and fun. Heritage Hall is known for providing abundant opportunity to its young performing artists, from preschool to 12th grade, which keeps production in the 350-seat Howard Theatre (and elsewhere) nearly constant. Past mainstage musical productions have included The Phantom of the Opera, Peter Pan, Titanic, Starlight Express and many more. Recently, Heritage Hall was chosen by Disney Theatricals and Music Theatre International to be the first school in Oklahoma to produce the full version of the musical Frozen, which will play to our regular audience as well as to students in underserved neighborhoods and a sensory-friendly performance for families impacted by autism. Thorough service, leadership, and creativity, our Technical Director plays a crucial role in bringing art to life for our students and community.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Production: Coordinate and oversee all technical aspects of theatrical productions, including set design, construction, lighting, sound, and special effects. Work closely with directors, designers, and production teams to understand and implement the artistic vision while ensuring technical feasibility. Organize student and volunteer teams to assist with design and building efforts.
Instruction: Teach two stagecraft classes; one section in the Upper School and one in Middle School, which incorporate a curriculum of both theoretical and practical lessons. In extracurricular activities, direct and supervise student crew members during set construction, rehearsals, and performances, ensuring smooth transitions, efficient technical execution, and a positive learning experience.
Theatre Management: Collaborate with arts, administrative, and maintenance teams to create a calendar of events in the Howard Theatre and ensure that the venue is prepared for events and in good general repair. Maintain and manage theatrical equipment, tools, and supplies, ensuring they are in good condition and readily available for use.
Safety and Training: Promote a safe working environment by adhering to safety protocols and providing training to students and volunteers on equipment usage and safety procedures.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required; education or fine arts field preferred.
Strong background in technical theatre (educational theatre preferred) including experience in set design, lighting, sound, and stage management.
Proficiency in technical theatre software and equipment.
Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
Knowledge of safety protocols and best practices in technical theatre.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends during production periods.
