The Department of Ensembles & Conducting invites applicants for the position of Associate Director of Bands. This is a Full-Time, Tenure-Track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position begins in August 2024.

The mission of the Department of Ensembles & Conducting, part of the Wells School of Music, is to provide an inclusive, world-class education by engaging students in diverse and evolving degree programs that further artistic excellence and help students become valuable contributors to a greater society. The Wells School of Music serves approximately 450 students with 60 faculty, enjoys full NASM membership, and offers fully accredited degrees in Music Education, Theory, Composition & Studio Composition, Music History, Music Therapy, and Music Performance.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong ability to manage, rehearse, program for, and recruit a high caliber ensemble in a thriving university music program. Their experience, substantive specialization, and pedagogical training will serve to strengthen the department's mission and vision. The person will use innovative teaching skills and demonstrate attention to the learning and teaching needs of the department’s students. The incumbent will collaborate with other department faculty and staff to ensure student success.
Responsibilities include:
Conduct the Wind Symphony.
Assist the Director of Bands in the day-to-day administrative duties of a very active collegiate band program.
Assist with the Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band.
Teach undergraduate or graduate level coursework in conducting. Classes will be offered in person. Additional teaching assignments/courses within the area or specialization may be assigned depending on departmental needs.
Engage in scholarly activities in line with department standards such as performance, research, recording, presentations, publications.
Engage in featured performances and recording projects that showcase the Wells School of Music.
Recruit and retain undergraduate and graduate students.
Foster collaborations both within and outside of the Wells School of Music.
Maintain a profile as a guest conductor and clinician.
Participate as an active member of the Wells School of Music faculty, serving on committees and advising students.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A Doctorate of Musical Arts or closely other related discipline (ABD may be considered - must be completed no later than July 30th, 2024).
At least 3 years of experience teaching in a music program at a public school level.
Current record of directing concert bands.
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience at a college level or higher education setting.
Record of scholarly activities including guest conducting, recordings, publications, and conference presentations.
