The School of Arts & Communication (ACO) at Southern Oregon University (SOU) is seeking candidates for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor in Performance, Acting. The Theatre Performance, Acting faculty member is responsible for providing courses in Acting at all levels, including introduction to acting, as well as other courses that support the Theatre major and in their areas of expertise. These courses might include Musical Theatre, Dance, Singing for Musical Theatre, Shakespeare, Film Acting, Devising, African-American Theatre, Asian-American Theatre, Latinx Theatre, Intimacy and Consent, World Theatre, Theatre History, Dramatic Literature, or others. They are also the academic advisor for many undergraduate performers and other students. This position may provide support for our active production season in their area(s) of specialization. Candidates with professional and/or academic directing experience and interest are encouraged to indicate that in their submission materials.
Teaching responsibilities may include online or large lecture-style courses. Other responsibilities include advising, curriculum development, research, professional affiliations as appropriate, and other responsibilities as assigned.
Faculty will engage in the administration of the program and production season, and make active contributions to departmental committees, curriculum development, student advising, and recruitment. As a tenure track member of the faculty, they will be expected to maintain their creative activity and scholarship. This can be achieved through continued professional engagement such as outside performance and coaching work, publishing, conference attendance, workshop presentations, and involvement in professional organizations.
The Southern Oregon University Theatre Program, located in Ashland, Oregon, is a large and busy undergraduate-only program serving approximately 200 majors. We are a BFA-only degree program, mounting between 3-6 full productions as well as many workshop and showcase presentations each year. Our performance faculty serve a conservatory-style cohort, as well other Theatre students and the general SOU student population. We work closely with other programs in the School of Arts and Communication, such as Digital Cinema, Music, Art, Emerging Media/ Digital Arts and Communication. The Oregon Center for the Arts, a component to the School of Arts & Communication, produces and presents the work of professional and student artists from the university and throughout the world through performances, exhibitions, festivals, concerts, special events and partnerships with arts organizations at the university and in the community. The Center encourages artistic development, contextual understanding, and explorations of creative expression.

This appointment requires a terminal degree in the discipline taught (e.g. MFA in Performance) or ABD.
