Assistant/Associate Professor in Voice and Speech (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is pleased to invite applications for a full time, nine-month, Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor in Voice and Speech beginning August 2024. We are particularly seeking an artist/scholar who is committed to inclusive and accessible teaching practices that train BFA and MFA actors for consent-forward, trauma-informed theatre making. This position reports to the Head of the Department of Theatre in connection with the Head of Acting. Assistant Professor Salary starts at $70,000. Associate Professor Salary starts at $80,000.

Duties include a general teaching load of 2 classes/semester as well as ongoing development of creative research and/or professional practice, committee work, advising, and (as appropriate) coaching shows in the Illinois Theatre season. Classroom topics shared with existing voice faculty may include Text Analysis, Vocal Production, Vocal Health and Anatomy, IPA, Accents/Dialects, Singing, Voice-Over, Vocal Pedagogy, or other areas of focus based on the candidate's expertise.

The ideal candidate will have significant training in and/or experience teaching a recognized Voice or Speech methodology (i.e., Fitzmaurice, Linklater, Rodenburg, Knight-Thompson Speechwork, Estill Voice Training, etc.), experience in coaching voice and/or accents for theatrical productions, and experience teaching Voice and Speech at the university level. The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate an existing record of or potential for a robust body of creative work/research. Additionally, the candidate shares a passion for teaching collaboratively with fellow Acting Faculty, developing curriculum, and mentoring students from other areas including Design, Tech, and Stage Management.

Position Qualifications:

• Terminal Degree or Equivalent Experience required; MFA preferred.
• Teaching Experience at the University level required, teaching in Voice/Speech preferred.
• Effective organizational and communication skills.
• Must possess an ability to collaborate effectively in teams working to develop curriculum.

The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign includes 24 faculty members, 12 Krannert Center Design and Technical faculty members, 3 academic staff, 7 campus affiliated faculty members, 130 undergraduates and more than 60 graduate students.
