The Manager of Jazz Education Programs is responsible for implementing and managing the instrumental jazz education programs of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc (POKC). Under the supervision of the Director of Instrumental Music Education, the Manager oversees a portfolio of programs that (1) develop and support pathways to engage and enrich POKC’s life-long arts education community and (2) develop and expand access for those in need to the artistic excellence produced and presented by POKC.
An integral part of the POKC team, the Manager will work closely with constituent groups of the organization, including local jazz musicians, staff, teaching artists, and the communities that we serve.
Essential Functions
Implement and manage POKC’s jazz education programs including Jazz4Freedom school concerts, in-school jazz education programs, side-by-side performances, and masterclasses. Jazz education content programmed in coordination with POKC’s Programming department.
Manage and identify performance opportunities for POKC jazz student ensembles.
Implement in-school jazz education programs using relevant program curriculum, lesson plans, and educational materials to inform POKC jazz education program activities.
Collaborate with the Manager of Orchestral Music Programs to identify opportunities for cross-genre experiences for students.
Assist the Director of Instrumental Music Education in the production of digital educational content, with a global reach, such as Virtual School Concert experiences.
Effectively manage and steward partnerships with external partners and stakeholders related to jazz education programs.
Contribute as an active part of the Education and Community team to meet institutional objectives; assist in strategic planning as required.
Work closely with the local jazz artists, organizations, and teaching artists in the area of educational activities.
Develop presentations for Education and Community for marketing, development, and Board purposes.
Support the implementation and maintenance of evaluative metrics across jazz programs, providing appropriate programmatic statistics as needed for grant applications.
Assist the Director of Instrumental Music Education in the management of jazz education program budgets.
Work closely with other staff departments to oversee production, marketing, artist management, ticketing, and event logistics for assigned concerts and programs.
Manage contract administration including fee negotiation, issuance of contracts, approval of riders, and distribution of payments associated with Education and Community programs.
Serve as a cross-departmental resource for the organization to ensure effective communication internally and externally around arts education and advocacy.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; M.A. degree (or higher) preferred, plus a minimum of two to four years of arts administration experience; or an equivalent combination of education/training and experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Strong commitment to the role of arts education as an agent for social change and community building.
Thorough understanding of different arts education and teaching artist pedagogies, particularly for youth, and the culture of orchestras, choirs and/or community music schools.
Experience in collaborative program design and development coupled with a successful track record of sustainable implementation and execution of large-scale projects.
Ability to communicate and work with multiple constituencies.
Demonstrable experience working with artists, arts educators, and students.
Experience working in community settings with a track record of achieving shared goals and successful program execution with multiple stakeholders and agendas.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrable ability to effectively facilitate meetings and present publicly and provide professional and appropriate business level written information utilizing various media.
Broad orchestral training and experience with a strong knowledge of orchestral repertoire.
Ability to work well on a team and in a high-pressure, multi-tasking environment.
Strong desktop computer skills (business professional level) and excellent time management and organizational skills.
Ability to work with diverse personalities and populations.
Ability to work cooperatively in a small open workplace environment.
Knowledge of state or national learning standards preferred.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Routine for office environment. The employee will be required to travel to and attend meetings, events, schools, and programs during daytime, evening, and weekend hours. The employee may also be expected to attend community-based meetings and networking opportunities during business hours, and during evening and weekend hours.
