Position Summary:
The Department of Dance in the School of Arts at UC Irvine seeks a motivated, flexible and adaptable pianist to accompany the school ballet. As a member of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, the incumbent is tasked with upholding and exemplifying excellence in the University's core competencies-- job mastery, goal accomplishment, enterprise contribution, and innovation-- while representing the Manager, Chair, and Department to the campus. The School of the Arts provides an engaging, supportive, challenging, and rewarding atmosphere where collaboration and innovation thrive. The pianist will accompany Ballet classes levels II, III and IV. Classes are based on traditional ballet techniques and styles. The pianist will play music that complements the dancers' movement for combinations given by the instructor, while matching the tempo, meter and overall character of each exercise. The pianist will have a repertoire of appropriate selections, which are arranged or adapted for ballet class.
Previous experience playing for ballet classes at university level
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Ability to improvise, or adapt the music as requested by the instructor Ability to play a range of tempos and meters, including odd meters Ability to adapt quickly to changes in tempo, meter and style as required by the instructor Knowledge of a wide range of styles of music Advanced ability to play piano for ballet class Ability to effectively communicate with instructor and follow directions

Advanced degree preferred.
Special Conditions Required:
Accompanist can use the percussion instruments available in the studios, or they can bring their own. Preset work schedule, but option to be available on call for additional classes as needed
