The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Suffolk University invites applications for a full-time, tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor to serve as Director of the Black Studies Program, beginning in Fall 2024. The position will be based in a CAS Humanities or Social Science department with a 2/2 undergraduate course load.

We seek teacher scholars with an interdisciplinary and imaginative research and teaching portfolio, whose work demonstrates broad interdisciplinary grounding in Black Studies. Candidates specializing in any discipline in the Humanities or Social Sciences in any period or sub-field or methodology are encouraged to apply. The Director of Black Studies leads development of curriculum, programs and events, oversees advising for the Black Studies minor and, fosters relationships with community partners in the city of Boston to advance opportunities for our diverse student body, especially experiential learning and community engagement opportunities, both signature features of a Suffolk education.

To lead the reinvigoration of the Black Studies Program, reimagined for the 21st century student, the successful candidate will build on the work of the Black Studies program, founded in 1993, to expand partnerships with students, staff, and faculty across many departments, and with local non-profit institutions such as the African Meeting House, the Museum of African American History on Beacon Hill, the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists (NCAAA), Embrace Boston, the Boston Art and Music Soul Festival (BAMS Fest), among other important cultural organizations in Boston and the Greater Boston area. An active network of Suffolk Black alumni (SUBAN) will support the Director's work.

The successful candidate will contribute to a rich tradition of community-engaged teaching and experiential education that prepares our diverse, substantially first-generation college students -40% of whom are Pell-eligible-for careers and civic engagement. We seek someone who is committed to inclusive pedagogy and curricular diversity, mentoring and advising students-especially first generation college students-as well as conducting impactful research.

A Ph.D. in a Humanities or Social Science discipline is required.
