Theater Director
Job Summary:
The Theater Director supports the overarching mission of the Department by fulfilling the following duties and responsibilities.
Job Description:
Manage and maintain production, front of house, and administrative aspects of the Glicker Milstein Theater (GMT) and supported spaces on a daily basis. Supported spaces include; scene shop, dressing room, lobby, and storage spaces.
Establish and maintain policies and procedures, provide fiscal oversight, scheduling, risk assessment, equipment and facilities support, staffing and publicity for the GMT.
Production Manage, technical direct, provide shop responses to designs and plans, and advance all events held in the GMT
Maintain GMT operating Budget
With support from GMT professional staff, and the Program Coordinator for Arts Education, facilitate the technical preparation of events or performances in the GMT
In collaboration with the Program Coordinator for Arts Education, manage student productions by guiding pre-professional teams through development of realistic budgets and production best practices.
Reconcile weekly box office revenue and maintain POS equipment and software
Liaise with key campus partners, including Columbia University affiliates, to schedule the use of the GMT as it relates to both academic and co-curricular needs
Establish and maintain relationships with vendors and manage third party rentals or other third party use of spaces and resources associated with the GMT and/or the Arts on Campus. Oversee the timely creation and processing of associated contracts for both third party endeavors and student groups.
Supervise, hire, and train all staff necessary to successfully manage the GMT and duties associated with the position: full-time, part-time, graduate assistant and independent contractors and student GMT Production Assistants.
Oversee the summer GMT operations including maintenance, rentals, and programming as the schedule permits.
Ensure that the GMT and all staff associated with the GMT are up-to-date with knowledge, required training, and certifications, including but not limited to ETC Software, emergency communication systems (intercom), lighting fixtures, Qlab, power tools, ticketing software, and FO3, ESAT, and OSHA 30 certifications.
Contribute to Department committees in the context of event production as needed including but not limited to NSOP, Leadership and Civic Engagement, Student Recognition, Commencement, etc.
Participate by staffing campus-wide programs and initiatives both via the Department and the College; may include some evening and weekend responsibilities
Serve on campus-wide committees representing the Department, specifically if there is a need or request for representation of event production or arts education
Other duties as assigned
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Theater, Event Production, Non-profit management, or a similar field. A Master's degree in related fields and/or Higher Education Administration, Student Development or similar field is encouraged but not required. Experience working in a college environment with college-age students is highly desirable.
5-7 years of experience in theater production, events management or event production
Demonstrated knowledge of industry standard theater technology and terminology
Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.
Experience working with the following software programs; ECT products and Software, QLab, Homebase, Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe platforms, and Engage or other Anthology programs.
Positive approach to professionalism
Ability to work in a high volume, high traffic, and high energy environment
Comfort working as a member of a team and willingness to be a member of the Barnard Community.
Salary Range: $87,000 - $92,000
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
