NYU's Los Angeles Program is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to design and teach an undergraduate course focused on the historical and critical understanding of the intersections between film, representation, and race for upper-level undergraduate students. 

The course will be under the sponsorship of NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

The course will take place in the academic center in the Fairfax/La Brea area of Los Angeles. Teaching commences in Spring 2023 (January 24 through May 15).  

The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Some administrative assistance is available to support the preparation of course materials. Courses are to be intellectually challenging in content and rigorous student assessment is required.

Course Description:

This course examines filmic representations of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and corresponding political, cultural, and social ideologies. Our aim will be to understand dominant and subversive storytelling techniques in films that focus on racialized subjects, sexual identity, and class privilege in the US. The goal is to illuminate how meanings of race are constructed and can be read through filmic aspects. We will focus on contemporary films by diverse filmmakers paying particular attention to matters of film authorship, narrative and rhetorical strategy, and technologies of cinema. Our analysis will illuminate how operations of power function filmically to produce both conventional and transgressive gazes. Screenings include work by and about people of color in both historical and contemporary contexts

Expectation of Hours: 

The class meeting pattern will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute "office hour" per week on location, during which time they will be available to meet with students.
