Department: Performing Arts Department-Lower, Middle and Upper School Bands Organizational Relationships: Reports to the Upper and Middle School Principal Summary: Teaches a wide range of ages and levels in a band program, instilling an appreciation of music and the students’ unique musical talents. Experience as an educator, with preparation and background in pedagogy related to instrumental music and ensemble performance at the secondary level are of primary importance. Has an Assistant Band Director with whom some work is shared. Nine-month teaching position. Subject-Related Expectations: - Directs instrumental rehearsals at LS/MS/US levels.
- Selects appropriate and varied repertoire to fit the instrumental needs and abilities of the students, engages their interest, and deepens their understanding of and connection to the world around them.
- Assists 5th through 12th-grade students in selecting and preparing literature for solo/ensemble contests and honor band auditions.
- Conducts rehearsals and performances as needed for all established programs:
US Family Weekend, US Christmas, LS/MS Christmas, spring US jazz band concert, spring 4th/5th band Concert, spring MS/US band concert, and Arts in Revue. - Provides orchestra direction for spring musical production.
- Coordinates instructional methods with other music faculty, where appropriate.
- Handles paperwork and administrative details as needed including accounting, record keeping, emails, copying, and filing.
- Oversees the care and placement of all pianos on campus, hiring a piano tuner/technician when needed.
- Hires all adjudicators for the ABC Solo & Ensemble Festival and oversees the planning and hosting of the ABC Festival (annually) and the District rehearsals and concert (every other year).
- Oversees maintenance of uniforms, equipment and band instruments including purchasing as necessary, assigning, labeling, inventorying, and keeping organized and in good repair.
- Oversees maintenance of music scores, including ordering, filing, collecting and inventorying music after performances, and designing programs for concerts.
- Coordinates the ordering of awards for the Visual & Performing department for the annual award ceremony.
- Helps incorporates technology into the program.
