JOB SUMMARY: The Middle School and Upper School Instrumental Music teacher designs and delivers a creative, student-centered, and inquiry-driven curriculum for grades 6-8. The teacher will have experience designing curriculum and learning activities based on specific learning outcomes and proficiency grading, as well as the ability to respond to the needs of middle school learners. In their classroom and in the middle school community, the teacher will promote curiosity and creativity, a high degree of instrumental music specific skill building, and instill in students a sense of community, social responsibility, and respect for individual differences. Teachers are guided by the Learning and Teaching at OES faculty growth model. 

The arts program at OES emphasizes inquiry and active learning through engagement with a broad range of media and artistic styles. The PK-12 Arts Department (which includes Visual, Performing, and Musical Arts) works collaboratively to support each other and the program across the divisions. Teachers are expected to fully participate in the vibrant life of the school; commitments outside of the classroom include leading an advisory, supervisory responsibilities during the school day, and going on off campus/overnight trips.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Facilitate dynamic, engaging, and effective learning experiences for Instrumental Music classes in grades 6-8th on a rotating schedule with classroom blocks of 75 minutes. 
• Implement innovative and student-centered music teaching practices that develop students’ traditional instrumental musical skills alongside contemporary practices like digital music production and recording
• Partner with the Middle School faculty and the academic department to create and adhere to best practices on thoughtfully guiding students throughout their learning process and explore opportunities for creative connections across disciplines. 
• Make learning visible with opportunities for critique, feedback, and reflection processes with diverse approaches.
• Work collaboratively with our Innovation Team to continue to maximize the value and use of our EC3 Design Center.

• Manage the classroom environment so that all students can learn safely and feel included.
• Establish and maintain appropriate standards for student behavior using Restorative Practice methods which encourage reflection and problem solving and support positive self-esteem and building relationships. 
• Engage fully in school-wide training around diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism (DEIA) and Middle School pedagogical work using the Social Justice standards from Learning for Justice. 
• Develop curriculum with clear learning outcomes, assessments, and means for feedback using a proficiency grading scale. 
• Proficiency with teaching online classes as needed. 
• Communicate with students and parents in a clear, timely, and professional manner.
• Advise a group of Middle School students and attend two overnight grade level trips.
• Attend Middle School meetings, Grade-level Team meetings, and Department meetings. 
• Serve as a role model for Middle School students.
