The Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre at the University of North Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the BFA Cinematic Arts and Theatre degree program beginning in fall 2023. This appointment is for a nine-month academic schedule. The successful candidate will teach a 12-hour course load each fall and spring semester - experience in online teaching or a willingness to learn how to develop and teach online courses is required. The successful candidate will be expected to: teach various levels of film and/or theatre design and tech courses (which may include courses in the areas of stagecraft, design, lighting design, scenography, and script analysis); design cinematic/theatrical productions which foster growth of the current student body, in consultation with acting/directing instructors, guest artists, and the technical director and assistant technical director of Norton Auditorium; develop and maintain an agenda of research and/or creative activities relevant in the field; perform recruiting activities for the department and program; perform student advising duties; assist in supervising production aspects associated with the program’s performance season; mentor students in the department and program; contribute to program curriculum development; manage program equipment and facilities; provide service to the department, college, university, and community/profession; and foster diversity and inclusion among program students. This position will also require the selected candidate to assist students with practicum/teaching projects. These projects are a part of the academic curriculum and can be off-campus film productions and/or theatre performances. These performances also require rehearsals, which may be conducted outside of “normal” business hours. A terminal degree in film production or theatre (specifically in a design, tech, or a related field) is required (MFA or Ph.D.). Experience and study in theatre design and technology is preferred.
