Berklee College of Music seeks a creative educator committed to excellence in teaching, who enjoys working in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding. The Songwriting Department invites applications for a full time faculty member. The Songwriting major is one of the fastest growing at the college and has a complete curriculum ranging from songwriting and lyric writing courses through technology, production and business and career courses. The Songwriting department’s intent is to furnish the student majoring in Songwriting with the techniques both in songwriting and production to be able to compose well- written songs and produce those songs at a competitive professional level.

Qualifications:

• Current industry credits as a songwriter with strong abilities as a musician, producer, lyricist, and/or topliner, or equivalent experience in the publishing/licensing/music supervision/A&R sectors, is preferred.

• Extensive experience in either Contemporary R&B, Soul, Gospel, Hip-hop, or Latin Pop, Urbano, Salsa, and Traditional Latin styles.

• Well-developed technology and production skills, including use of multiple DAW’s and sequencing software. Fluency in either Ableton Live, Logic ProX and/or ProTools is a required skill for this position

• Minimum of 5 years teaching experience, college level preferred

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, preferably at the college or professional level

• Knowledge of the Songwriting curriculum as it has developed at Berklee is essential

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential

• Command of technology to advance teaching and learning is essential

• Proven commitment to working with a diverse community, including faculty, staff and students; and in working towards developing and supporting curricula along these lines is essential

Responsibilities:

Teach courses as assigned, primarily the department’s contemporary topline and industry- focused courses as related to songwriting:

• Intro to Topline and Topline and Vocal Production

• Senior Seminar

• Arranging, Business, and Technology courses as consistent with candidate’s expertise

• Teach Directed Studies (one to one private study)

• Teach other Songwriting core courses that may fit the candidate’s area of expertise.

• Submit syllabi for all courses assigned

• Attend department meetings as instructed/informed and contribute to the faculty community of the Songwriting Department, Professional Writing & Technology Division, and Berklee

• Engage in duties agreed upon between you and the Chair that can fulfill the Full Time faculty obligations of Service to the college

• Take part in professional development to maintain and continually advance teaching and content area skills and knowledge

• Participate in professional organizations, industry events, to foster a strong network beyond campus

• Attend College-wide events (e.g., Opening Day) and follow all other guidelines per the Faculty Contract Agreement

• Additional duties as assigned

Appointment to begin September 1, 2023. This is a nine month full time position. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
