Start Date: August 21, 2023 The Upper and Middle Division Department of Theatre and Dance is seeking a dedicated, talented, and collaborative Technical Director (TD) to join the staff of the Horace Mann School. The technical director is responsible for creating, building, and installing lighting and set design for all UD/MD productions (4-5 per year). These designs will be created in collaboration with the faculty directors and student designers. The TD is ultimately responsible for managing the design and building process and making sure to stay within the production schedule and budget. The TD maintains and purchases all tools and materials used in the scene shop and is responsible for the theatrical operations of the performance spaces, which include Gross Theatre (our mainstage), the Black Box Theatre, the Cooper Dance Studio and the Sanders Recital Hall. The TD will work closely in collaboration with students, running the after-school stage crew program for UD students and teaching one or two courses in scene design and production in either the UD or MD. The TD is a 10-month staff position and is expected to be present on campus from 10 am to 6 pm, in addition to nights and weekends during performances and occasional weekend builds and technical rehearsals. The salary range for this position is $55,000 to $85,000 based on experience. The candidate should demonstrate strong technical abilities and a vision for set design, lighting design, and theatrical production. Experience in sound design is a plus. The candidate should have a deep knowledge of the history of theatrical design and stagecraft. The candidate should have a passion for working with students from 6th to 12th grade, including both teaching and mentoring student designers. The ideal candidate is a lover of the Performing Arts, who stays up to date with the world of theatre and dance, and who will bring to our department innovative ways to tell stories through design. A Bachelor’s degree in Theatrical Design/Production or a related field is required. An advanced degree in design or education is a plus. This position has a physical requirement including lifting, balancing, crouching, climbing and working from great heights.
