Assistant Professor of Stage Combat Position Summary The University of North Carolina School of the Arts School of Drama seeks a dynamic teacher of Stage Combat to teach a robust two-and-a-half-year Stage Combat sequence, involving preparing students for SAFD certifications in unarmed, knife, and one (or more) of the six SAFD recognized weapons. Competitive candidates might also have expertise in other physical acting and/or dance pedagogies, certification or familiarity with Intimacy coordination and direction. A history of creating training spaces that are welcoming to students from all different backgrounds is required, along with SAFD teacher certification and a solid background of professional Stage Combat/ Fight Choreography. Description of Responsibilities and Duties This multi-year contract faculty position will contribute to the UNCSA School of Drama in three categories: Teaching, Creative Activity/Research, and Service. Teaching- Teach a four-semester sequence in Stage Combat designed to lead to testing for weapon certification by the Society of American Fight Directors in unarmed and knife after the first three semesters and a weapon of choice from any of the six recognized weapons at the end of the fourth semester. Create, teach and implement Stage combat/ Choreography for School of Drama productions, a credited class listed as Rehearsal and Performance. Creative Activity/Research- Continued professional activity and creative research within the entertainment industry. Service- Mentor and advise undergraduate students majoring in Acting or Directing; Active participation in shared governance of the university community through service to the program, school, and institution, direct and/or supervise student work in the School of Drama production program. Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Drama. Required Qualifications Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors A history of professional work as a Stage Combat/ Fight Choreographer Faculty teaching undergraduate level courses must possess: Earned doctorate/master’s degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline or earned master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline OR Equivalent professional/experiential qualifications OR Equivalent combination of education and professional experience Preferred Qualifications Evidence of work that incorporates and supports diverse identities Ability to incorporate non-Western approaches to stage combat Background in other physical acting disciplines and/or dance Certification or familiarity with Intimacy coordination and direction Evidence of potential for a high quality of teaching Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
