Experience Required: 5+ year-round camp management or educational leadership experience. Bachelor’s Degree from accredited university or relevant experience (preferably in education, social work, performing arts or other relevant fields.) Knowledge of circus arts a plus. Experience building inclusive community spaces and working with diverse populations.

Position Purpose: To further the mission of Camp Winnarainbow through the strategic planning, hiring and execution of Camp programs and events. Provide oversight over Camp’s performing arts programming activities, ensuring that they are safe, fun, and developmentally appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Co-manage the overall organization operation in conjunction with the Managing Director.

Camp Winnarainbow (CWR) is a transformative children’s performing arts and circus program located in central Mendocino County, California. CWR was founded in 1975 by Woodstock veteran Wavy Gravy and his wife Jahanara with the mission to provide children from diverse racial and economic backgrounds the means to learn circus skills in the embrace of community. Their philosophy, that children playing together will break barriers and build compassion, has produced generations of children who are now leading the planet in creating a mindful, just, and collaborative society. CWR serves the children of over 400 families each summer, of which more than 25% receive financial assistance.
The role of the Director of Programs is a position with substantial responsibility and growth potential. In addition to hiring and training over 100 seasonal employees, this person is responsible for the development and management of all interpersonal aspects of the Camp Program. The Director of Programs will demonstrate an enthusiastic commitment to an inclusive, accessible, and welcoming experience for all campers, families, and staff. The Director of Programs will work closely with the Managing Director in strategic planning, community engagement, standards compliance, and new programming initiatives, and with the Camp Life Dean, in facilitating the Camp Program during the summer.
Successful candidates will have demonstrated leadership experience in a camp or similar educational setting, superb communication skills, and the commitment to work successfully with constituents and colleagues with diverse identities and lived experiences. The Director of Programs will have a passion for youth development through mindful, artistic, holistic educational experiences.
While working at Camp, the Director of Programs is responsible for directing the day-to-day supervision, programming, and administration of the program. In ‘off-season’, the Director of Programs will perform planning, marketing, recruitment and hiring, development of policies and procedures. The Director of Programs will lead efforts to make CWR more diverse, equitable, and inclusive, blending valued camp traditions with strategies for welcoming new campers, staff and traditions.

Primary Job Requirements: 1) Deliver a fun, mission & values-driven summer outdoor performing arts program for campers, teen staff and adult staff.
2) Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow health and safety protocols.
3) Supervise, develop, mentor, and evaluate Camp Winnarainbow programming, counseling, and teen staff.
4) In collaboration with the Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer, develop an annual and overarching organizational strategy that reflects the Camp mission and is reflective of the needs of its community.
5) In collaboration with the executive team, ensure that Camp Winnarainbow is meeting American Camping Association (ACA), federal, state and local compliance across all facets of the organization. Oversee the ACA accreditation process with a particular focus on the Camp programming standards.
