David Geffen School of Drama at Yale/Yale Repertory Theatre (DGSD/YRT) seek a Faculty member in Design and Scenic Charge to support the Technical Design and Production department. This person will collaborate with faculty and staff at a unique and storied institution: the most comprehensive graduate theater training program in the United States, operating together with the Tony Award-winning LORT theater in downtown New Haven, CT, on the campus of a world-class research university. In a conservatory model, students work side-by-side with experienced professionals on productions, creating a highly collaborative, multi-generational environment for training and production.

The mission of DGSD/YRT is to train leaders in every discipline of the theatre, making art to inspire joy, empathy, and understanding in the world.  

As a faculty member, this person will report to the Co-Chairs of the Design program, teaching classes in design topics, as well as advising, training, and supervising students of David Geffen School of Drama. As Scenic Charge, the individual will also report to the DGSD/YRT Production Manager, coordinating and supervising the work of the DGSD/YRT paint shop. This person will help to foster an organizational culture that reflects DGSD/YRT's commitment to developing anti-racist theater practice and its ongoing efforts in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.  

Teaching and Mentoring

1. Teach two (2) courses per semester as assigned by the Co-Chairs of the Design department, including but not limited to Scene Painting Techniques and Life Drawing, if applicable.
2. In concert with the Co-Chairs and faculty of the Design program, participate in ongoing development of curriculum.
3. In concert with Co-Chairs and faculty of the Design program, mentor scenic designers assigned to DGSD/YRT productions in scene painting.
4. Supervise and evaluate scene painting work of graduate students and interns.
5. Occasional travel out of state for conferences and training.
6. Other duties as agreed upon by the Co-Chairs of Design program.

Core Faculty Responsibilities

1. Participate in department and all-school faculty meetings.
2. Represent the Design program within and outside of DGSD.
3. Promote and champion DGSD Designers in the industry.
4. Other duties, including committee service, as requested by Co-Chairs or Dean.

Production Responsibilities and Supervision

1. Collaborate with Production Manager to achieve and maintain high artistic and managerial standards for DGSD/YRT productions.
2. Oversee, supervise, schedule, and conduction annual review of paint shop staff, casual employees, and work-study labor assigned to work on DGSD/YRT productions.
3. Oversee the development of paint budgets for DGSD/YRT productions.
4. Lead the implementation of scenic art for DGSD/YRT productions.
5. Participate in activities including but not limited to budget and production meetings; oversight of planning, build, and load-in phases; attendance at selected rehearsals, technical rehearsals, previews, note sessions, and venue restore.
6. In cooperation with the Director of Production, monitor and expend paint shop supply budgets.
7. Assure the adequate care and maintenance of paint shop equipment needed to create scenic art for DGSD/YRT productions.
8. Maintain complete, accurate and timely production budgets, and annual shop material and maintenance financial records.
9. Collaborate with appropriate department heads, both students and staff, concerning DGSD/YRT productions and the physical space of the paint shop.
10. Implement paint shop priorities, policies, rules and deadlines with all users of the space.
11. Collaborate with Director of Theater Safety and Occupational Health regarding health and safety aspects of the paint shop operation on DGSD/YRT productions.
12. Supervise daily and annual cleanup of the paint shop.
13. Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
14. Other duties as assigned by Production Manager.

Experience

1. Significant professional scenic charge experience.
2. Significant working knowledge of scenic painting techniques.
3. Preferred: experience teaching or mentoring

Term of Appointment, Salary, and Benefits:

Appointment will be as an Assistant Professor Adjunct or Associate Professor Adjunct or Professor in the Practice, depending on qualifications, for a renewable term of three years beginning July 1, 2023.
