The Assistant Dean of Academic Programming is responsible for outreach, trainings, lectures, workshops, and special events related to the Columbia Core Curriculum and to the undergraduate academic experience more broadly. The incumbent will organize programming about the content of the Core Curriculum and about the undergraduate academic experience for a range of activities and events involving Columbia faculty, students, alumni, staff, and the general public.
Curricular and co-curricular events for the Columbia community
Coordinates the visits from expert lecturers from the Columbia and Barnard communities and from other institutions of higher education for the weekly faculty meetings of the faculty of the Core Curriculum.
Manages and coordinates all course-wide lectures designed for faculty and students in the Core Curriculum courses.
Identifies cultural events in New York City related to the content and experience of the Core Curriculum courses; coordinates course-related outings to theaters, dance companies, musical groups, museums, and other cultural institutions; establishes and cultivates relationships with artists and cultural institutions throughout New York City.
Provides support to the Editorial Board of the Core Knowledge book series.
Intellectual programming for alumni, parents, and the general public
Working closely with Alumni Relations, organizes regular intellectual programming centered on or extending from the undergraduate Core Curriculum, including ???Mini-Core Classes,??? faculty expert lectures for Reunion and other events throughout the year, including Caf?? Columbia events (including book salons, museum tours, and other cultural programs led by Columbia faculty) and ???Core Conversations??? virtual book clubs.
Collaborates with Alumni and Development and Communications staff to innovate, design and execute new intellectual programming opportunities for alumni.
Working closely with the office of Admissions and the office of Student and Family Support, coordinates faculty expert lectures for prospective students and for parents during Days on Campus, Family Days, and other events throughout the year.
Manages outreach to and programming in partnership with other organizations within Columbia, including the Holder Initiative, the Justice in Education program, Columbia Community Service, and the Double Discovery Center, as well as for external constituencies, including other institutions in higher education and high schools.
Trainings and workshops
Working closely with Columbia???s Center for Teaching and Learning, organizes and coordinates trainings and professional development workshops for instructors of Core Curriculum courses, including orientations for new graduate Preceptors and general pedagogical support for faculty.
Collaborating with the Director of the Center for the Core Curriculum and with faculty Core Chairs, develops and runs workshops for students in Core Curriculum courses that support the development of academic skills applicable to their work in Core courses.
Related academic programming
Plans and/or coordinates programs for faculty, students, staff, and alumni promoting and highlighting the academic experience of undergraduate students.
Provides support for programs, information sessions, and workshops for students that connect their studies in the Core Curriculum to other elements of their academic experience???e.g., to their majors, to research opportunities, or to fellowship opportunities.
Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum of four years related experience working with faculty and students in higher education in one or more of the following areas is required: teaching in Columbia???s Core Curriculum or a college curriculum with similar content and learning goals, faculty support, academic advising, and/or supportive academic programs.
Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and administrative skills required.
Excellent judgment, flexibility and an ability to work well with a broad constituency required.
Must be able to work autonomously and collaboratively under deadline pressures.
Advanced degree desirable; PhD degree preferred.
Academic administrative experience preferred.
6 years of related experience preferred.
