Kimball Union Academy (KUA) seeks an experienced, student-centered, and pedagogically innovative Director of Technical Theater and Performing Arts who is also able to teach English, history, mathematics, Spanish, or science to join our community as a full-time faculty member who will actively support and fulfill KUA’s mission “to create a deep sense of belonging for every member of our community. Through intentionally designed experiences and challenges, our students develop the knowledge, voice, and character to live with purpose and integrity.” 

ABOUT THE POSITION

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Support the technical aspects of the performing arts curriculum and mainstage performances at Kimball Union, including the fall play and winter musical, as well as the semi-annual dance and music concerts 
• Support Flick Gig Concerts—the professional performance series which occur 6 times per year 
• Support other student performances  

• Plan and teach?four sections of English, history, mathematics, science or Spanish?as required in other posted job descriptions 
• Teach a curriculum and work in collaboration with a community that embraces diversity, provides equity, and ensures inclusion and belonging for all 
• Open to learning and utilizing the principles of KUA Design within the classroom, coaching, advising and within the residential program 
• Teach using current pedagogical practices including Universal Design for Learning, backwards planning (Understanding by Design), and project-based learning to equip students with the 21st century skills they need for college and beyond 
• Advise a small cohort of students 

• Serve as a dorm parent in our residential program and work within a team to supervise and facilitate weekend activities on occasional weekends
  
• Pursue continuous growth and development in understanding and implementation of diverse and effective instructional practices
  
• Contribute knowledge, expertise, and passion to the on-going collaborative effort to innovate and improve KUA’s curriculum
  
• Participate in committee work as assigned by school leadership

• Technical Theater Duties 

  • Order and organize tooling and construction materials and supplies as required 
  • Supervise building scenery and mounting sets 
  • Collaborate with Theatre Director to design and program lighting and sound for productions 
  • Oversee student crews during the Theatre Activity during the fall and winter seasons 
  • Read and create working drawings of designs 
  • Collaborate with arts department members and members of the production team 
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive working environment 
  • Mentor both faculty and students in technical aspects of performance 
  • Monitor departmental budgets as allocated 
  • Attend initial design meetings with directors and weekly production meetings 
  • Assign crews to run/operate All-School Meetings and performances 
  • Attend all technical rehearsals and organize needed support 
  • Coordinate the deconstruction/strike of all scenery and restore the space 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair of the Arts Department
