UMN Morris Theatre Discipline is seeking applications for the position of Actor Technician position. This is a 75% time, 9 month, annually renewable position. This position is responsible for the construction and care of costume and publicity materials, maintaining costume and publicity spaces, and provides supervision to student workers for the UMN Morris Theatre Discipline productions. This position will report to Humanities Division Chair. The work is classified as 4936 - Actor Technician and represented by the AFSCME Technical union. Reporting to the Division Chair of the Humanities. The Theatre Discipline Costumer and Publicist works under the guidance of the supervisor of the position and production director and is responsible for the construction and care of costume and publicity materials, maintaining costume and publicity spaces, and provides supervision to student workers for the UMN Morris Theatre Discipline productions. Duties include acquiring necessary materials for costumes and publicity, caring for equipment, attending meetings and select rehearsals, and assisting faculty with additional help as needed.
This position must demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Job duties include Costume Shop Manager 60% - Coordinate and complete the purchase, rental, and/or construction of garments.
- Complete tasks within the established project timelines, fitting schedules, and established budget.
- Assign, train, and lead students as they support this role in performing patterning, construction, assembling, and fitting of costumes for productions, including the completion of special projects such as dying, fabric painting, and millinery.
- Help execute the visual look/concept and plan for costume needs of all performances under the guidance of the director and other artistic team members.
- Participating in wardrobe fittings and production dress rehearsals.
- Attend at least one run-through and two evening technical rehearsals.
- Maintain the costume spaces and keep them organized, including:
- organizing, maintaining, cleaning, and restocking costumes and makeup; and
- managing item loans and donations.
- Coordinate with other departments, companies, and schools for the creation, rental, or loan of costumes.
Publicity/Box Office 30% - Coordinate and complete the creation of marketing materials.
- Complete tasks within the established project timelines, details, and established budget.
- Assign, teach and lead students as they support this role in creating advertising for the performance, including, press releases, media alerts, social media, newspaper, campus email, posters, photos, programs, displays, digital signage, and media alerts.
- Maintain and update media lists.
- Keep archives updated and maintain show archives.
- Take photographs of the shows and actors.
- Manage booking for invited school shows.
- Maintain and update contact list for schools.
- Oversee and/or create education packets for teachers.
- Box Office / House Management
- Manage the box office and house, and/or train students to do this task.
- Recruit and coordinate volunteer ushers.
- Record and track ticket sales.
Other Responsibilities 10% - Hire students in both Costume Shop and Publicity Office.
- Post student job openings.
- Set up for and attend Job Fairs.
- Hold interviews for open positions.
- Maintain student employment documents.
- Contribute to the learning experience for work study students, and student designers. This includes but is not limited to:
- instructing students in the technical aspects of costume construction and publicity, and the proper and safe use of associated machinery; and
- supervising/guiding students while they are constructing costumes and publicity materials and correcting mistakes made if needed.
Hours Regular hours have been established and approved by the supervisor: 10:30-5:00 Monday –Friday. Any changes to the schedule must be approved in advance, by the supervisor. - 15 hours/week will be maintained during the 2:00-5:00 pm weekday times, which includes supervising work-study students to produce production material.
- 15 hours/week spent in meetings, rehearsals, prep for work-study students, and shopping when needed.
- Occasional evenings or weekends required, particularly during technical rehearsals and performances.
- Daytime hours may be adjusted with supervisor approval when evening or weekend time is required.
- Occasional shifts past 7:00 pm and could go as late as 11:00 pm. If this time is assigned by the supervisor, the shift may be eligible for shift differential as defined by the bargaining unit agreement.
- Accrued comp time may be used during winter break.
